    Winch went out

My winch bit the bullet this weekend. Anybody have recommendations on a particular winch? I was thinking of doing an elecrtic one, but I can't find one rated high enough unless I spend $500. That ain't gonna happen.
    Anybody have one you love?

    just found this..http://www.overtons.com/modperl/prod...view&from=grid

    might try this one???

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Cap. on Rolling Bunks 9,900 lbs.
Cap. on Flat Bunks 5,900 lbs.
    Vertical Lift 3,500 lbs.

That is far more than what you need. Stock is 1400lbs. I have a 1500lb replacement I just installed.

Remember that there is little winching actually required as long as the bunks are submerged.

I would WAAYY rather have too much just to be safe. I don't put my front bunks in the water because the back end doesn't line up well, I always end up with an inner skeg resting on the bunk. Winching it the last way onto it is the only way to ensure it lines up properly unless I just get lucky when I pull it out.

Try having people strategically seated in the boat when you pull it outta the water. It should do the trick

Guess I'm not sure what you're saying.... How can that help? I would like to have new guide posts made that are tighter to do the trick but I'm too cheap to pay for that to be done.

If one were to go with an electric winch, any suggestions as to which one?

Careful winching your boat on too much. You can pull the hook out of the bow. We alawys keep the front bunks just under water. Not deep enough to float in on, but deep enough that we use the motor to power us up the last couple of feet.

FYI- Some Departments of Conservation frown on driving boats up a trailers due to the washout that is caused by the prop behind the boat. I was ticketed in Illinois twice for it and Wisconsin warned me last year.

I float mine on until the last foot or so. The bow eye is meant to pull boat on trailer. It is a matter of getting trailer at correct depth.

Ignoring Dept of Conservation my wife mis-calculated and nailed the frame and not a bunk with my previous boat. The gash she put in may me cry on a 13 year old boat. We where in a shallow water ramp when lake was way down and the back cargo area of jeep was under water I had to go in so deep.

Back on subject I would use the power winch Jason B found. At almost 6000lbs it should have plenty of margin even with boatload of peeps.

Yup, i saw an animation of it on boat-ed.com but im not sure exactly where on the site it is. I think its something that will only matter if the ramp itself is not long(underwater) because the thrust from your boat moves dirt and then it settles, leaving a pile that can get big enough to stop a boat. if that makes sense lol.

Ill give you an example of what I mean. On our boat, we have three 7 gal freshwater jugs that stay in the port locker always to add to the surf wake, when we pull the boat out of the water we have everyone sit as far to the starboard side as possible while still staying in the back of the boat. Allowing it to sit level in the water, which allows it to sit on the trailer evenly. Same idea to get the fin to not hit on the trailer. Make sure everyone is in the back of the boat regardless, that makes it easier to get all the way up with out having to crank much or use much engine power.

^^^ OK I gotcha, that makes more sense. I have never even once had a person in the boat as I loaded, I make them get out on the dock--guess I'm mean. lol maybe I should try it since it's ussually the starboard side skeg that's resting on the bunk. It's emabarrasing having to back it into the water and try and reposition it.

I ordered the bigger TracWinch electric winch, should be here in 5 days. I'll let you guys know how it works.....or if it rips the bow eye off my boat. lol Reviews said it was a pita to hook up, but I can't see how damn tough running a wire and connecting 2 eyelets to a battery can be.

2 or 3 people should be perfect, if not just keep adding them haha. Let me know if that works! in theory it should be perfect, and has worked for me!

ok, 1st pic is the old winch I wiped out. Not real sure HOW that happened, but it was toast for a while and I waited until it died to change it.
2nd pic is the winch I got ffrom Overton's on sale for $159.
3rd pic is the stand where the winch was. I new I was in for a struggle when I saw that stud. The electric winch was completely encased and had no holes for a stud but rather slides cut out to lock in a bolt that came with it....
4th pic is with the outer case removed (PITA!!!) looking in at the nut I had to weasel in there with Ukranian gymnast finesse and try like hell to tighten w/ a 14mm wrench. Fun...
5th pic is all installed. I very much dislike how the power wires exit the side. Seems pretty stupid to have it go that way instead of forward. I also don't like how it uses a connector instead of having it hard-wired. I'll fix that if it becomes a problem. The silver part on the front is the emergency hand crank. TOTAL POS!!! It BARELY fits over the clutch bolt and it grated the threads a little when I used it with no tension on the line. I imagine if I need to use that handle it will be a poor place for children or elderly with sensitive ears to be near me.
6th pic is just wired to the stereo bank to put tension on the line so when I trailer it's taut.

Overall, there are some things I would definitely change, but the install was not too, too horrible. I wouldn't suggest some of my less mechanical friends do it, but non-numbskulls would be fine.
I haven't used it to actually get the boat on the trailer yet so I can't comment on that. I ordered a trolling motor connector and some 8 gauge wire to hardwire this to my truck. I don't want to buy another battery to stick in my bed just for this thing.

oops, last pic wasn't suppose to be on there
but it's the wife's damage after the Hawks won the Stanley Cup.
The paint literally was not even dry on the last repair she had from side-swiping a kneehigh retaining wall 2 weeks earlier.
This mess represents her FIFTH accident in 7 months! lol Geico loves me I'm sure!!! lol
