motor shutting off when idleing between surf sets

Every time we go surfing lately after a few sets when coming back to a downed rider at or just above idle my 2004 22V with 350 mercruiser will die. We can always fire right back up but it is certainly annoying and a bit worrisome. We are not running that much weight, just a 400 in the port side, a 250 under the port seats and a 500 in the belly plus a few peeps. Any ideas? It used to seem like it would happen after hours of surfing, now it is more like 30 minutes. I had my local dealer look at it last year and they could not find anything. This season I got the impeller changed at the annual service. Any suggestions as always would be greatly appreciated!

is it alamring and running hot?

When they changed your impeller was it fully intact?

I had a similar problem because a piece of impeller was in the system and limiting flow so it was running hot.

No it is not alarming or running hot. I need to look closer at the exact temp next time but it is right at the temp it always runs at. I want to sat like 175?

Sounds like either a vacuum leak or a sticking IAC (Idle Air Control) motor. They are easy to remove and clean with a spray can of carb cleaner. May not hurt to clean the spark arrestor and throttle plates as well.

Thanks. Good stuff to check out this weekend, I will find a manual to find all these suspect parts and see what I can find.

Mine does this as well, if it is very hot outside. My guess was that maybe vapor locking in the fuel line? The longer I let it wait before restarting, the more times it happens. Since it only happens when temps are around 100, I have done nothing, and engine always runs fine when it is cooler.

On second though, read this thread: IAC

That does sound like the IAC. That will be the first thing I look at on Saturday before I hit the lake. Thanks again Gentleman for the great advice!

I was getting air in my fuel manifold. We purged it last time out and it ran great all wkend. We put 9hrs on it during the Memorial day wkend. About 3-4 was surfing.

I'm in the same temps as you, AustinSouthSide. I've found that I need to run my blower when temps are real hot because I have trouble restarting after I turn the motor off following a run. It could be that you're not getting enough air into your engine compartment. I'd also try cleaning the flame arrestor as Chpthril suggests.
