With the gear ratio reduction, with either the vortec 315 or mercruiser 315 have enough power to run the 4 bag ballast and weight?
Which engine do you suggest, vortec or mercruiser?
Both mercruiser and the "Tigé GM VORTEC" inboards are actually both based on GM vortec engines. The difference is that the Marine Power converts the blocks for marine use for the Tigé-branded one, and mercruiser does the other. PCM is the same way.
I will say that I've been told that the marine power engines have had instances of corrosion. It is for this reason alone I'm steering clear of them. Also, the only fuel injected 315hp option is mercruiser- the other is carbureted.
As for 315hp w/ synchrotech, it'll be plenty. I've driven 22vs both weighted and unweighted, with and without synchrotech- trust me, it's plenty with w/o, but the added torque from the gear reduction is nice.
As for what I'd suggest- Go with Mercruiser or PCM. PCM will have more punch, but mercruiser has a bigger service network.
We have always run the Merc 315hp with the synchrotec and been very happy with it. None of my 22V customers have had issues with this power. However, both the GM Vortec and PCM are both great options. I guess it depends on what you want to pay for the motor upgrade.
I have the 315 and synchrotech with 2k of ballast and it is fine. I also repitched and recupped my Acme 4 blade and that makes a huge difference for hole shots with heavy loads. Best $100 I spent on the boat!
