    2009 supra sunsport 22V

    Hi all,
I have friend in another state who is thinking about buying their 1st boat. They have 2 young teenagers. They do not have a Tige dealer anywhere close to them. They are looking at a 2009 Supra sunport 22V. They are also looking at one of the Yamaha 24ft jet boats as well as a Sea Ray in the 22 - 24 ft range. As he is finding out, there is no boat that satisfies all his needs. Does anyone have any opinions about the supra sunsport 22v or the yamaha jet boats in the 22 - 24 ft range.

    thanks

    Kerlee

The yamaha & sea ray will have a crappy wake for wakeboarding, skating & surfing. All things you would want to do behind a wake boat.

can't surf behind the searay since its i/o (stern drive). way dangerous and I doubt the jet boat would throw any decent wave even though wake surfing may not be on your list - its major blast that can be done safely with inboard boats only.

What is he looking to use the boat for? When he has a list of things that his family wants the boat to do, they will be better placed to buy the right one.

Jetboats suck for everything except tubing.

With two teenagers, I would imagine they will quickly wish they had an inboard, so they can surf, etc. I believe they would have regrets within a month of buying anything but an inboard...

I noticed this year at the boat show that they are now making Yamahas with ballast, but I have no clue about the shape/quality of the wake. Obviously, I would say inboard, as well.

I read an article that Jetboats appeal to moms in that they are "safe" with no exposed prop and roomy, and to dad's because they are "fast". But what they don't say is they are annoying/loud (9000rpms on 2 engines), slippery--no rudder to track straight, and certainly no fins like a Tige or other wb boat. Also they are not very fuel efficient. If not into wake sports, would be fun.

I/O's are also fun, more maneuverable, probably lower cost, but can't surf behind them because the prop is exposed. You can wakeboard, but is very difficult to keep right speed because it wants to plane between 17-22mph. Keeping speed is really touchy. Wakes are doable, but not optimized. Also the bow rise is disconcerting because you can't see where you are going until it get to planing speed. Also, more maintenance on the outdrive.

WakeBoard boats (Direct or VDrive) are definitely a step up from both of those. No exposed prop. Can surf. Can keep speed. No/minimal bow rise. Huge seating area. Don't have to worry about outdrive maintenance. We prefer the vDrive for cockpit space.

Cons: probably more expensive for similar size and harder to maneuver at slow/docking speeds and reverse until you get used to them. Tige's can be 'trimmed' somewhat with TAPS plate for choppy water, but I/O's have more trim control.

We totally understand the reasons why we love our Tige after owning an I/O for 5 years.

Bottom line is every boat is fun, and your pal can always get a different one the more they understand what they like/need. Trying them out is the key.

I would rate that Supra highest among his choices. That Supra is also a pretty good choice overall. Really nice surf wake (with weight of coarse). Fair interior and "good" pricing. My buddy almost pulled the trigger on one. He tried a lot of boats, From Malibu to Cobalt and the Supra was top of the list until I made him take a Tige for a demo.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.
