Hello,

Looking to purchase my first boat as me and my family have recently acquired a lake house on LBJ in TX. Would love to stay under 34-40k and will spend most of the time surfing and wakeboarding. I've heard a 22'+ boat is the right move.

I've seen some decent deals on 2008-2011 22vé boats in my area in my price range. But I've also seen a few Z1 Z3 boats. I've looking at all the specs and difference and think a 22-23ft boat would be the right size, and fit in my smaller slip.

Am I on the right track searching for a well maintained 22vé? Should the age be a concern as far as surfing goes? Or should I wait it out for a 2012+ Z3 boat in my price range? Will I be happy surfing on a 22vé?

Also open to other options, there's a hell of a deal on a 2009 Nautique Super Air 230 close by as well. Would love to hear feedback from owners on what they love and hate, what I should shoot for.

Congrats on the purchase. Lucky that lake always has water, I'm on Canyon Lake just south of LBJ and we can't access the lake due to the level being so low.

You are on the right track, generally the older the boat the simpler the electronics and mechanicals when it comes to the ballast systems. There are a few threads on here documenting the build of better than stock surf systems on the Ve platform. If you are more into the press a button and let the system take care of the ballast than a new boat Z3 would be the route. All the boats listed are more than capable of making a nice surf wave.

Thanks for the response! Yes we are lucky to be on LBJ. Obviously the Z boats look more updated and have more bells and whistles. None of that stuff is super critical or a "must have", worth saving for?

It comes down to preference. For me, I prefer simpler so that if something is not working right I can troubleshoot and fix without any special tools so that would put me in the older Ve or Z3 camp.
