Gas Gauge on 1998 Tige pre2100wt

Hi. We have a new-to-us 1998 Tige pre 2100 wt. It has been fantastic. But the gas gauge is confusing me.

The online spec sheets say 37 gallon tank.

The gauge shows full after I fill it up and it automatically clicks off at the fuel pump. From that point onward over the next several days it bounces around a bit (when we are boating or pulling people). I have normally taken the highest reading it records over a short period as the actual amount in the tank. So if it bounces between zero and half within 30 mins... I assume it is 1/2 full because if I go to fill it up right then, I can put in around 15 or 20 gallons (which is half of 37 spec)

Recently it dropped down to zero though and did not rise up much from there. And it started to sputter a bit. We headed straight for the marina (it ran fine during those 5-10mins at lowish speed) and had them fill it up. It originally clicked off at 14 gallons, but gas guy said it felt false so kept going, and then it really shut off at 24 gallons into the tank. A far cry from the 37 gallon tank volume.

So is my tank actually just 24 gallons? Or it my gas gauge bad and the sputtering was just a fluke?

Your gauge sounds normal. It is the design of the tank that is causing the variation. It is long and flat. The fuel just sloshes around in there. It is most accurate sitting calm in the water. Just how people are sitting in the boat can cause it to change. The fuel pickup and sending unit are on on the starboard side. We used to list our boat for surfing on the port side. one time, while surfing, we ran out fuel. we dumped our ballot bag on the surf side and had 1/4 tank to get us back to the houseboat. You could always measure it to confirm your volume. It should be easy to access.

We have the 96 PRE2100WT. same scenario. I don’t believe the 37 gallon rating. We just got the boat. I’m gonna carry a spare gas can and run it dry. Not very scientific. I’d pump it out but don’t have enough gas cans.
      keep us posted Bmason.
