    surfing

So I can't find the thread about what lots of weight does to the transmission. I know it was talked about before but any words of wisdom?

I'm currently getting the tranny rebuilt in my ride and the mech said if you're going to be weighting the boat for surfing it's good to put on a larger tranny cooler. There are folks on here a lot more knowledgeable than me and can hopefully say whether that's true or not.

There was a thread about this and I don't remember where it was or what the final answer was.

Not sure why he would suggest that??? We don't use torqe converters in a boat application which is where the heat comes from in a transmission from torque shear. Your trans shouldn't run any hotter when surfing because of weight. If anything it will run hotter at higher speeds.

I'm not familiar with boat or v drive applications so I'm not sure if they make larger clutch packs for the v drive. That would be the only way to gain more "holding" power from the v drive. IMO a larger cooler will not help with longevity in a boat application, and may even shorten it's lifespan.

Really? Wow, maybe I shouldn't spend the money then. What the guy said made sense to me, but what do I know. I figured a lot of weight either wakeboarding or surfing would make work harder for the tranny and thus the need for better cooling...

Your right, if it was a car or a truck. Just make sure you change the fluid!

My tranny is still solid after4 years of our own surfing and a few years from the previous owner surfing and boarding with about 1500lbs of ballast.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Thanks for the advice. I'll call a couple other shops in the morning and get some more opinions but from what yall are telling me I don't think I'm going to drop the extra $$ for the bigger tranny cooler.

Please spend your money on something worthwhile. Get ahold of chpthril for some ballast or audio accesories on the money you saved!!!!

Hopefully the guy rebuilt your trans properly, personally I would be very sceptical based on the advise you were given.

I called several local dealers this morning and everyone said a larger tranny cooler was not necessary. Thanks for the heads-up guys
