How much play should there be in my rudder box?

I am replacing my cable and my rotary helm. (Morse helm no longer around). My steering works great when not under power, but very difficult to turn when turning left at speed. I understand that the prop wash has something to do with this. But when I check the rudder when it is out of the water, there is a little bit of movement, when I push it side to side. I am wondering if my rudder box is binding. Should it be completely solid or is a little movement OK?

Also, there does seem to be a bind at certain point when turning the rudder by hand. Hopefully, that will go away when I replace the cable.

Has anybody replaced their rudder box, how much do they cost, can I buy one through Andrew (Thanks for the cable and dry suit)?

The ones listed in my catalog range from (list price) $135 for a 1" shaft up to $650 for a 2" shaft.

Looks like you will need to know: Shaft size, Flange dimensions and is it square or rectangle, and bearing length.

How'd you make out with the 485?

Thanks! Everything worked out great. I replaced the driver and now I am terrorizing everybody on the lake again
