Checking engine hours

Looking at a 2005 20v with gm 5.7. What equipment is needed to check engine hours? Is there a handheld scanner that can be plugged in like obdII on a car? Really like the boat but owner saying there is no hour meter on boat.

I have never seen one without an hour meter.

When I've taken mine in to the shop they've told me the hours. They had a handheld scanner that checked for codes and let me know the motor has 4.3 hrs more than the hourmeter

The true hrs are stored in the ECM, it will take a scan tool to retrieve them. The gauges on the dash also show the hours, but they are stored in a volatile memory, and can be reset with a low battery situation. You will need the proprietary interface, a universal code reader from the local auto parts store will not work.

Look in the dash, and the perfect pass should have it. Push the up arrow and the menu button at the same time, and then press the menu button to cycle through untill you see hours. Mines not exactly the same as the rolling gauge in my dash but it should give you an idea.

I think all it is, is a couple of cables and a CD that gets loaded on a laptop.

When my computer was flashed to fix surging problem with SpeedSet the ECM hours information was set back to 0. If I understand correctly, I can get the actual hours back.

Am I reading that right? Can I have them reset memory to real number of hours?

Depending on the year of the motor it will be MEFI 1 thru 4 now.

Marine EFI I use a software program on my laptop. I use it to scan and monitor I do not need to tune but it is available. Also the cost is much cheaper.
MEFIScan 4 for my 2004 PCM motor.

Not quite sure what the total hrs are on our craft.

ECM has been replaced 3 times.

We only have 30+ hours on our boat!!!!

Thats pretty low for a 2005
