2005 24v DIY Surfsystem Vertical Malibu styke

I think it’s time for a surf system on my ghetto 2005 24v surf machine.

I’m thinking of going DIY. The nauticurl is proven on my boat. So I might copy the basic placement and shape. So more like a Malibu surf gate then say a gsa. Vertical vs horizontal.

Lenco actuators and simple Lenco controller. I don’t want or need to do transfers. So nothing too fancy.

What DIY guys have done this install. Any issues? Thoughts?

I have a few suck gate parts laying around.

I personally think the side gate (Malibu style) makes the most sense for wave shape. But I could be wrong. I’m not an engineer, even though sometimes I think I am.
My swim deck is already cut down. Also that area of the transom is about as empty as it gets on a 24v.

Bu went away from the lencos for a reason. Just be prepared for a high failure rate if you go the same mounting as they did. Biggest issue to their failures was a side load. If you can mount to platform so its more in a compression state than a bending state, I think it would be fine.

What did they go to? Most of the boats I have owned had lenco tabs with zero issues.

I put tabs and gates on my 22v last year. So far I found for best performance out of the gates I needed alot more bow weight than the tabs, but my setup is ever evolving. I plan to make a cut down platform and taller gates this spring as well as longer tabs. I don't need to fully deploy the gates and found if I do, it robs push, but it fully cleans up the lip.

Parker hydraulic electric actuators. Don't confuse tabs that have little to no side load and very low force, with a setup like Bu has. A surf plate, like taps 3, has 600+lbs of force on the actuator. I am guessing the Bu tabs have 800+ based on their position and how they function. The GSA setup is ideal for Lenco. its a straight shot with minimal side load.

Personal I wouldn't sweat using Lencos, they aren't without fault but they are simple, cost effective and very present in the boating world as you know.

When using them on gates, they go thru a larger angular change of position than many other typical applicants. With the hand crafted hulls the mounting surfaces for the actuators is not always repeatable, plumb and square to the gate and hinge surface. This is where I can see bending and binding occurring and this is magnified by the large angular position change. All this means is take time and care when installing them that they don't bind thru the range of motion.

I after liking at this I am a little confused. Are tabs and gates operated on opposite sides when surfing or the same? I am far from an engineer fit the taps look to increase lift on the rear of the hull rather than sink it like the ballast we are all accustom to using. I do understand the physics of the gates creating delayed convergence. The trim tabs on a larger cabin cruisers and the like are used to extend the running surface and create lift to level out an unbalanced boat if I understand correctly.

I am sure this setup works well but I cannot figure out how.

Shear wave size, sure. Power? Not necessarily. Certain tab designs (say GSA) can funnel water and thus power into the back end of the wave. I agree wholeheartedly that gates will usually yield a fatter albeit more rounded out wave, tabs produce a crisper more vertical wave on average. I would argue that the power is better in a tab wave vs a gate wave.

Well said. Honestly most people probably prefer a long powerful wave. Not so intimidating and great for skim/ skim surf. Probably better for most tricks as well. I am just used to an old, fat and tall wave.

I am honestly just going to mimic what my wave is now. Which is a hybrid listed wave (2500 or so surf side, 1500 or so off side) Then suck gate and speed around 12.5 mph. Taps 3-4.
