2016 R 21 360 in Colorado

Hi. Advise seeking. Looking at buying a 2016 R2-1 with Raptor 360. Bringing it from sea level to Colorado where we lose HP. Concerned the 360 maybe underpowered when loaded for surfing. Don’t want to make a $70k error.

Anyone running this out in Colorado and advise? Should I wait on a 400 min?

What's your elevation at the lake you'll normally use?

The 21 isn't super heavy but the 360 will likely be underpowered at 4000+ft.
That said if you're not concerned with top speed you can prop down to regain most of that lost performance, you'll just be at higher RPM and have a lower top speed.

Approx 5500 ft in denver front range. Coming from a stern drive so we always rep-roped lower pitch and lost the top end. Would the 400 really be that much of a difference at our elevation? what prop would be a recommended?

with the 360 wondering how much top end are we talking about lose of? We like to “Cruise” and young kid that tubes so don’t want to sacrifice all that. Boat is very clean and well kept and surprisingly a “good” price by today’s standards.

If it has the 1.5:1 drive on it, I wouldn’t do it. I have a 2016 RZX which is a bigger heavier boat, but it also has the 440 and is a slug, with that drive. I have is propped down to an 11” pitch, which helped a ton. It took my top speed from about 40 to like 32-33, but that’s tached out. I run from close to sea level up to 6200’. Like 4500’ it works pretty good, but about 5000’ and above, I have to run less rear ballast when surfing. I also run a bunch of lead in the bow to help with hitting plane.

RZX and an R21 are quite different in the weight department.

We ran an R21 in McCall Idaho (5013 ft) with a 360. Ran a flatter 12 pitch prop. Did everything fine with 5 adults and 2 kids on board. A bit slow out of the hole full ballast but would still plane out weather surfing or wakeboarding.

That was just our experience with it. If you wanted to add lead I'd say no.

Drove an R21 with the 400 and it was great and was up at 7700 feet. That’s my only ref point.

They’re definitely different in weight, I also imagine the bow shape makes a difference. I wouldn’t run a boat with a 1.5:1 drive, at my elevation, but that’s 100% because of my experience, and not necessarily because it wouldn’t work.

We’re in the Sierras, so we have a pretty wide array of elevations we run at. Our home lake is 4200’ and change, but we can run from sea level to Tahoe, at 6200’, and even higher, in about a 2 hour drive. Tahoe is the highest I’ve run at, and I can’t even put ballast in my boat, and hit above about 10mph, up there.

I have a 2017 R21 with a 360. I regularly run it at 3300’, but it’s been at 5500’. We run an acme 1617 prop. I think it has like 2800# of stock ballast and I also have 500# of lead in it. I’ve never had trouble getting up to surf. I’m 230 ish pounds. It cruises nicely 25-30 mph and tops out about 40 mph with this prop. We usually have our family of 4, but have had 9 (4 adults) people in it.

The R series did not switch to 2:1, just the larger RZXs. I think the last couple years did go to 1.76:1 tho....

Sounds like it’s likely a 1.5:1, I’m surprised they do that well at elevation, with the 360. I sure as hell wouldn’t have guessed that. Glad I’m the only idiot that bought a boat that wouldn’t work where I live. Glad to hear it’s good for you fellas!!
