    09 Z1 -Stereo & Ipod help

I have an 09 Z1 with the factory Clarion and the plug that plugs directly into an Ipod. I am new to Ipod's, just used a cheap MP3 player in old boat. I got a Nano 4gb. I only had the boat out twice with the new Ipod. I spoke to my dealer after first time and they were not sure of the Ipod and told me some things to take notice to, I did yesterday.

Here is my problem. When we are changing riders and I turn the engine off and then turn it back on, the stereo does not recognize the Ipod. I must unplug and plug the Ipod back in for the tunes to be played over the stereo. I know the Ipod is not shutting off because it has a built in speaker to go with the video feature and I can still here musc playing from the Ipod when not working with stereo.

Here is the catch, it does not happen all the time. It worked fine for the first few hours of boarding, never had to unplug it once until about 3-4 hours into our day.

Any thoughts? I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Well, Clarion makes a damn good head unit, but their tech support is non-existent, unless you are a dealer, and know who to call.

The first thing I would do is relocate the small red wire from the ignition switch's ACC terminal to an unused rocker switch on the dash. This red wire is th head-unit's remote turn-on wire, so by putting it on a rocker switch, and off the key, the stereo stays on when you turn the ignition switch off. No need for turning the key ACC and waiting for everything to come back on This may not be an actual fix for the problem, bu it may be a way around what could be inducing the problem. Skier's Choice (Moomba/Supra) have the rocker switch covers with a music note on it, this makes it nice to designate which switch is for the stereo.

chpthril has suugested a way around it but that doesn't really address fixing my problem. Does anyone else use an ipod with their new clarion head unit? Does it turn off and you have to unplug and plug it back in everytime you shut the engine off or do you plug it in once and it works all day?

I don't believe that it should force you to do that. However, there are many different iPod models and the model that you are using may not be fully certified/tested by Clarion.

For what it's worth, when towing, I normally connect my iPod via the MP3 (1/8") adaptor. If we are hanging out in a cove, I'll plug it up via the USB/iPod interface so that we can use the transom remote.

IPD does make a good point, Clarion, as well as others, do state that their interfaces are not compatible with all Ipods, let me see is I can get some additional info on which ones.

Your dealer's fears of the battery going dead based on my earlier post are justified, but, there are a couple of ways around that. 1) reconfiguring the wiring, and the entire stereo, including the head-unit, will be drawing off the ACC deep-cycle. Since you have the Tige EIDB, the isolator will prevent the starting battery from running down. 2) even as the system is wired now, the head-units remote turn-on hardly draws any current, so all that needs to be done is make sure the H/U's yellow power and black ground are running off the ACC battery. This is a 15 minute fix by just running them to the amp(s). Now, if one is worried about accidentally leaving the system on after a day on the water, then do an experiment for me: turn the key to the ACC position, turn on the radio, now turn the battery ON/OFF switch to OFF. I believe this will kill all the power to the helm.
