    Smoking Starter

    So my starter began acting up today and eventually started smoking, I have a Mag 350 MPI 5.7L tournament ski. Everything was smooth at the beginning of the day, turned the boat off mid day to swim and when I turned the ignition I heard the fly wheel begin to rotate and turn over. Following that I heard the fly wheel come to an immediate stop, (Sounded like a loud clunk). I checked all connections on the starter and found nothing wrong, checked for voltage and everything came back cherry. I decided to give it another go and the starter began smoking, after that I heard the solenoid spinning and nothing else. I ordered a new starter as I assume it's dust and a new one runs about $60. Could it be anything major other than the starter?

    The boat is a 1999 Tige 21v Riders Edition, I assume the starter has never been replaced as I bought it for a discount due to the previous owner not taking care of it. I plan to go through and check all connections and fuses to make sure everything is proper.

    Not sure about the problem. Just make sure you are replacing with a marine starter not an automotive version.
    Price seems a little low for a marine version.

      ^^ditto the marine starter concern.

      Also...it sounds like you might be hydro locked. might be worth pulling plugs to see....

          If you hydro-locked the engine and then tried to start it multiple times and then only heard the bendix spinning, you may have blown the teeth off the ring gear as well. Figure out if there's water in the cylinders first by pulling spark plugs.
          Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

            All I can say is thank you, pulled the plugs and had water spurt out. Since my starter isn’t functioning I turned it over manually until no water was leaking out. Further more I sprayed wd-40 in the cylinders and gave it a couple more rotations and sprayed again. I’m taking it to a mechanic ASAP, if anyone has any further recommendations as to what I should do until I see the mechanic please let me know!

              I'd start with a compression check. If there's a low hole then there's a chance you bent a rod. Were any of the electrodes on the spark plugs exceptionally rusty??

                The boat wasn’t running when water got into the cylinders so I’m hoping I didn’t damage a rod. All the spark plugs were rust free, I live in a very dry non humid environment so rust takes quite a bit to develop. I’ll get a compression check ASAP, I also heard putting a sprits of oil in the cylinders is a good idea, thoughts on that?

                  I have the exact same boat and had the exact same problem last year. Pulled all the plugs, replaced the starter, cranked it over to blow out all the water, then checked compression on all 8.
                  Once all confirmed good, sprayed a good squirt of WD40 in each cylinder and new plugs installed. Also changed the oil for good measure.
                  Cranked right up and smoked like crazy while burning off the WD40, but all was great. Ran it like normal (surfing, cruising, etc) for a full day and then changed the oil again because I’m OCD.

                  Here’s what I presume happened. Good hot engine, and you stopped for a swim or just to sit. Riser cooled and created a vacuum and sucked lake water into the exhaust head and with at least one exhaust valve open it filled the cylinder. Mine only had water in one bank, guessing yours did also.

                  You should be fine, that was last year and she finished the year out great and is purring this year too.

                    Exactly what happened, I wonder if there are any preventative measures you can take to reduce the chance of hydro lock?
