Temporary Registration on New (to me) boat

Hi, new here. We just bought our first boat and are getting some conflicting information regarding registration in our state (Arizona). We are still waiting on the actual registration but we expected that we would have a temporary registration that would allow us to get on the water. The dealer keeps saying that the Bill of Sale showing registration and sales tax paid will serve as the temporary registration. I've spoken to Game and Fish on several different occasions and each time they have told me that this is not an acceptable form of Registration Proof and if you are caught on the water you will get cited.

I was just curious if anyone else (preferably also in AZ) has encountered something similar. It's been over a month since we bought the boat and the weather is getting really nice and we are anxious to get out on the water.

I have faced similar challenges. I would recommend email communication with the dealer (in writing) stating everything above and asking for a response. Once that's clear, I would boat until you receive something and if cited, I would send a copy of the citation to the dealer politely asking them to take care of it.

I've heard from friends that registration in AZ is a pain to register. Do you have insurance on the boat? That is the important part. Friends of mine are always in and out of demo boats that are not registered and as far as I know, have never had a problem on lake pleasant. If they ask just say it's a brand new boat which it is.

ymmv but since we share a few lakes with AZ, we were told that it was ok to use for first 30 days but after that no bueno. this was NV but mead/mohave share with AZ and were told it's the same on both sides of the water.

not sure I understand "still waiting on registration". either you did it and have a receipt showing or you haven't? in NV once you pay the bill you can go even if stickers haven't been sent yet. proof is in the paper receipt you have to print.

I do have insurance on the boat, so that part is taken care of.

When I said “still waiting on registration”, what I meant is, the dealer told me they were submitting all of the related documents. My bill of sale shows I paid the registration fees, but apparently the dealer has 45 days to submit the paperwork and they still have yet to do so. They told me to just keep the bill of sale on me showing that registration and sales tax were paid and that would suffice as a “temporary registration”. Game and fish told me that there is an supposed to be an actual temporary registration the dealer is supposed to give you that has a game and fish insignia on the top of it and if you don’t have that you will get cited.

I think the people you talked to are not the same people who actually do the enforcing. I know fish cops are not always reasonable, but usually they are as long as you are not a jerk. Showing them the bill of sale and explaining it is brand new is usually sufficient. It worked for me in Utah until my actual registration and plates came in.
              Be excellent to one another.

When I bought my boat in Texas, the dealer provided temporary tags for the boat...

Totally depends...We can issue an Iowa temporary registration card only if the boat is getting registered in Iowa, if the boat/owner were registering the boat in say South Dakota for example we legally are not allowed to issue the temp card.

So what is your dealers problem? This is absurd. If it’s their responsibility to submit it, why haven’t they? I’d be kicking the damn door down. What dealer is it? Public shaming usually produces results in cases of negligence.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

I’m sure they’ll use the standard “Covid times, blah, blah, blah” as an excuse for terrible customer service, just like everyone else. I know I’m sick of hearing it from companies, also know I can’t get away with doing it to my customers.

My wife got fed up with it and took over. She's been calling them every day since last week and they made it sound like they hadn't submitted it yet, even though now it's been over a month. They assured her yesterday that we would have something this week. I guess we'll see. We decided not to press our luck with using the bill of sale and then going after the dealer if we ended up getting cited.

I’d be standing in the sales manager’s office until it was done. Total
