    Mercury 600hp outboard

    Sorry but it is a cold winter night and I’m bored, any boat talk puts me in a better mood. What are your thoughts on Mercury’s new 600hp outboard? Pretty impressive, I like the way only the gear case turns for steering.

    This will be huge for the big offshore market. Imagine a cabin cruiser with 4 of these vs 2 big inboards. Lots more space for living quarters and stuff. (At least that’s the use case I saw today).

    I wonder what the fuel burn on these is for 4 600 vs two 1200hp diesel? Maybe that’s not the right comparison..

      I guess if you can afford 4 of those engines, fuel isn’t a concern. For us normal people, it has to be incredible, 200+ gph? Interesting thing is that it’s naturally aspirated, so what will the supercharged version be.

        Keep seeing it pop up everywhere, merc is definitely doing something right with marketing. Changing the steering looks like an interesting concept. Probably wont see one up here on the west coast for a while, everything is Yamaha and Evinrude. What is the price tag on this bad boy?

        Seen a few smaller yachts already with 2 or 3 outboards hidden underneath the transom. Definitely saves a ton of space not having the engine compartment.

              $78K each. Steering system is out of the box and hopefully doesn't leak at the seals but just another keep up with the Jones' item. They weigh 1200lbs... and I love outboards because they're so damn reliable but this appears to be overkill. However, compared to triple Verado 400's on the same boat, a pair of these bad boys produced almost 10mph more and 20% better fuel economy. I have a customer with an MTI that has quad Verado 400r's on it who is already asking. Time will tell, as it always does, if the design will hold up. I'll post a video when I get to drive a boat with them.
              Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

                It’s first gen so obviously some scary tech in there, but long term 2 engines is more efficient then 3 for sure.

                I guess you install them with a fork lift and a sling eh?

                  I think it’s interesting the fuel efficiency and hp levels they are getting with small displacement naturally aspirated engines. I know these are 7.6 liters (461 ci) but this is from 12 cylinders. I’ve have a 4.7 liter v8 car that is around 500 naturally aspirated hp, and it gets 24 mph on the highway at 75 mph.

                    I keep seeing comments about 2 speed trans when I see posts. Anyone know if it actually is a 2 speed?? I haven't dont my homework yet.

                      It does. I watched a review on it. It goes from a 3:1 to a 2.5:1 or something when it hits redline. Don’t quote me on the numbers (I rounded). Freaking bonkers.

                        Kinda reminds me of the Force 120 L-Drive. I definitely like the concept. The stability of the motor/transom mount with rotating lower cases is clearly superior. The money though. Good god. I’m sure it’s cheap to work on too. Anybody seen a schematic on the lower end/steering assembly?

                            So, If I had a second boat and was rich, an open bow sport yacht would probably be the winner. Mercury has their test results for the Formula 500 SSC (Drool) with 4 (FOUR) 600 HP engines on it. 70mph top speed, optimal cruise was 48MPH and 97GPH of fuel burn. A semi equivilent 50 foot range boat with 4 400s did 32MPH @ 90 GPH of burn at the same RPM.
