i have a black tige and the lower half of the back is not as shiny as the rest of the boat any ideas what to shine it up with

use a buffing compound to get the oxidation out of the gelcoat, there have been some threads on here talking about it, just do a search

3M Finess and a variable speed polisher, then marine polish, then wax. Get a course and fine polish pad and then finish with a wool pad and wax.

How important is it to get a "good" polisher? They sell a rather cheap version at a local shop for 30 which is not too bad. Is it also important to get one that is random orbiting?

If you have never polished before definitely start with an orbital. I tried the el cheapo from (insert auto store name here) and I was not satisfied with the results. I just bought a porter cable 7424xp for $130 and so far I really like it. Right tool for the right job!

Ok, i'm no body guy, but have been around the auto scene for a while You've got polishers and buffers. Polishers need to be variable speed so you dont "burn" the gel-coat or clear coat (on a car) and are for the first couple of restoration steps. They are best used with a course then fine eggshell pad and going from a rough to fine compound. Buffers typically have a fixed but medium RPM, and are often orbital. They are best for waxing stage and used with a wool covered pad.

So, for the restoration of a dull boat or car, one will need a polisher. For routine waxing of a good surface, then an orbital buffer is the ticket

use aquabuff 1000 compound and a buffer. then wax.

this last round of compounding I used aquabuff for the first time its like wet sanding with a buffer. wipe compound on with brush mist with water buff and BAM great results.
