Last week I was at the river pulling me son wakeboarding and made a left turn. While turning left i felt a the steering wheel go further that usual. Apon stopping i noticed i was taking on water and raced back to the ramp. After pulling the boat out I noticed the rudder plate broke through the right side of the hull. No marks on the prop or rudder. I had a fiberglass guy give me a quote and he noticed the area around the rudder was to thin to support the rudder. I looked at some old post pictures of other boats with cable problems and noticed their rudder bolts had a 1/4" of exposed bolt. Mine has nearly an inch exposed(fiberglass to thin). I have been dealing with Harvey Smith at Tige and he has been great. First pass of the warranty commitee they weren't going to cover it. They are reviewing it tomorrow again and hopefully they will change their minds. The boat is a 2003 22v riders edition with 151hrs (90hrs since i bought it in november). The boat is in prestine condition and should have never had this problem. Let's see how TIGE stands behind their product. Here are the pictures...

I am going to make a bet that your boat has been wrecked before and the repair job was not done correctly.
If this was from the manufacturer, I am sure it would have failed 6-7 years ago. I think an experienced fiberglass guy might be able to tell.
EDIT: I notice that the rudder says 12/2002 on it...doesn't completely rule out previous damage, but makes it less likely that the previous owner hit something, used the same rudder, or found a used one. It would be possible that the rudder was not damaged in the strike so they kept it.
Maybe you should have let them have a chance to analyze the situation before you put it up on the website where hundreds of people will see it. Now that you have trashed Tige on their own forum, they may feel less inclined to help.Last edited by talltigeguy; 05-11-2010, 10:37 PM.Be excellent to one another.

I would not let the amount of exposed bolt threads be an indicator of anything, bolt lengths can change from hull to hull, model to model and year to year. If you look at Zads picture, you can see the area of the glassed-in reinforcement, that's what counts. Cant tell anything from Goose's pics.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

You are smart enough to know what the problem is and it does no good to stir the pot John.
It is really odd that this failed while just driving! I wonder how long the failure actually took.
You can tell quite a bit from the picture, can't you? It appears that nothing was hit going in a forward direction. It also appears that a hit from the rear did not cause the failure as the break would have been toward the front. What we cannot see is the thickness of the glass; however, it is possible to see that the rudder plate is fully recessed into the inside of the hull at the point of failure and therefore it might be possible to get the actual thickness measured and compared to standard.
I do not see that Goose trashed Tige in any way. I see that he voiced his mind - fairly respectably IMHO.
In any case, however it will work out, I hope you get her all fixed up and on the water again!Last edited by jwanck11; 05-12-2010, 01:04 AM.

That rudder mount and everything looks just like mine did on my 2003 21IR.
I wish I had some pictures of it.
Best of luck in the end. Hope it works out. If it's possible to have a dealer/fiber guy/expert figure out what happened and give the report to tige maybe it would help your cause, if it is indeed Tige's fault...Originally posted by G-MONEYIt hurts me to say it but go OU but only for this weekend!!!!

Thats definitely a very high stress area and needs to have all the reinforcements in place or its going to break. Give Tige a chance to fix the problem. Persistance will pay off here. I would be pretty upset if they denied my claim as well but it has been a long time since the boat was manufactured. Don't they have some kind of crazy hull warranty of 20 years or something?
One other suggestion, be nice, it gets you much more help. Just myBiggest lake addict on the planet
