Thanks. Yes I am definitely going to get the flappers. I’ve read about someone get hydro lock in the past , was it you? Very cheap insurance IMO....

It may have been, I know a couple others have had the same issue but under different circumstances.
I posted here about my experience a couple years ago.
I talked to Larry (The boss) at FAE before I purchased it and he had said the flappers where an option but not really necessary. Im a cheap *** so I skipped them. Oops.
I also talked with him after my mishap at length and he was blown away.
Basically what happened to me was my motor overheated because of a clogged strainer. I was on plane when the engine auto shutdown and as the boat sank off plane the water rushed into the pipe and over the risers into the cylinders. It was the perfect storm for this system but flappers would have 100% prevented it. I got lucky and didn’t do any permanent damage but it was an eye opener.
They are an add on but are totally worth it and should be on all them in my opinion.
I’m not sure if they’ve changed their ways with the hardware but the kits on all 4 I’ve installed included screws that were maybe a quarter inch longer but were thinner than the OEM screws they were to replace, I had my doubts about the first one and should’ve trusted my gut because a couple broke and the others pulled out. The other kits I’ve installed I tossed the FAE supplied stuff, bought quality hardware for them and haven’t had any more issues.
It amazes me....had a Centurion Ri257 that hydrolocked this summer. Hard to believe that the water could make thru that plate design they use but it happened. Water in both banks.

My IO (alpha 1 genII mercrusier) had flapper just before the risers (I think)....I guess these vdrives don’t have internal flappers, just the 1 external flapper?

Yeah, the flappers are entirely different and live in the down pipes from the risers on MerCruiser. The new Tiges have a cool hinged flapper thats just in from the transom. Theres also a baffle that helps upstream from transom thru hull. Skiers uses it as well.
It doesn't take much water since it doesn't compress.

I was thinking that about the newer tiges. The built in flapper in the exhaust hose like two feet up from the transom. I assume this is good enough right? Factory FAE does not have a flapper built in right?
A little late but I would opt for the one with the additional support rather than the thru hull.
I've seen a LOT and I mean a lot of broken FAE welds lately, the more support the better IMO.

You'd think with all the pipefitters down there for oil and gas they could pick up some guys that can lay down a solid root and pretty cap on stainless. Things must be picking back up in W Texas

I have 2 close friends with Ri's that had it happen to and one of them it happened to them twice. The problem with the Ri hull is how low the engine sits in the water with the ram fill full on the 257 and 37. You cannot shut off the engine without risking it, some risk it in calm water or with a small crew. For the 2020 models they actually start to drain the rear pnp bags if you let it sit with the engine off. For 20221 the new ri245 and 65 they have valve that close automatically now to completely seal off any water.
Also regarding the mounting application of the FAE once again I would highly recommend using thru hull bolts and not just screws. After mine came off not only once last year my dealer told me today that he noticed one of the screws was half out while working on my boat.

Guy said his wife tried a 3 and when she fell he just cut the engine. Unfortunately someone else diagnosed it as a starter. He replaced starter and of course issue remained, so he tried us. Knew right away after hearing his description. He didn't believe me so pulled all 8 and jumped the starter with him in the boat. He was amazed at how much water got pumped out.
