Just thought I would throw this out there for general knowledge.
Took the boat out the other day and Taps plate was fully retracted. I asked the wife to put it down to make it easier to install the boat plug. The plate eventually dropped enough to install the plug, and we launched the boat.
Once on the water we could not get the Taps plate to drop down and the boat was porpoising (30 MPH). I jumped into the lake and applied force to the plate while my wife worked the switch. We eventually got the plate to hold in the # 3 position on the gauge.
Once we were home I pulled out the Bennett trim tab manual that came with the boat and read about oil type and level etc.
I made my wife hop into the rear locker and remove the pump cover and my pump reservoir was bone dry. Added 24oz of tranny fluid, buttoned everything up and all was well.
I have no idea when or where the fluid leaked out of the system, I suspect it was gradual loss over the last four years.
We took the boat out the next day and everything worked great. My Taps is now very quick from full up to down at all speeds, I have not had it work this well even when the boat was new. I don't think we noticed a drop off in Taps performance do to it was a gradual decline, It was always kinda slow to change positions.
If it has been awhile since you checked the fluid level (Or in my case never) you might want to check it. A V-drive really needs that Taps plate for ride quality and speed.
