    2017 RZX3 vs 2018

I'm looking for a 23' surf boat. Mostly just to surf with family and friends. Usually a crew of 3-6 and our son is 10. I have been looking at X23's, Supra SL's, RZX/ZX3 and G23's. Ideally I'd like a boat that's a year or two old to save some cost. For whatever reason there seems to be more used private sale RZX3's available in my area then anything else. I dont know if that's a good thing or not. The Tige's seem to be a good compromise between quality, freeboard, features and price. If money was no object, I really like the 19+ SL Supra's. G23's are sweet too but $$.

There is availability of a couple nice low hour (80hrs or less) 2017 RZX3'. 575 Roush, Full load, Triple Axle trailers, Clamping racks, PnP etc but DON'T have the smart wheel. Priced in the low 100's (100-110K).

There is a 2018 that was never sold so i assume it would have full warranty and I actually like the color of the best. It's a 440, tandem axle trailer but otherwise full load (with smart wheel). I think I can get it for a price that is in the same (100-110 range) as the 17's.

    Questions:
    1) How hard and what is the approx cost to add the smart wheel to the 17?
    2) Would you go for a used boat with the 575 or go new? We are at higher elevations, can only get premium gas at our marina and I dont want to have to fight with lack of power.

Any other words of wisdom or things i should look out for?

    Thanks

If you go for a 2017 make sure it has the 2:1 transmission if it does not have the charger. At elevation you will hate the lack of power from the 440. But with the 2:1 it is fine. The 2018's all came with the 2:1. I hear the smart will is simple plug and play and my dealer quoted me "around $700" for it. That was 2 years ago. I would test drive any of the N/A engines with the 2:1 before just settling on the charger. If you find the boat meets your needs with the 440 then go for it. No reason to have a charger if you don't need it. After all, Ford never designed or intended that motor to be blown.

I purchased a used 2017 with the 575 a year and a half ago and have been really happy with it, I don't think there is a 2:1 option on the 575 but have heard good things about the 2:1 on the smaller engines. If you can find a deal on the 575 I would go for it. The previous owner did have the 18 steering wheel added to my boat, I added the metal phone holder and recently had Jason at Germain SoCal add the new GSA surf tabs and put a thruster on, killer boat and killer value compared to a new boat.

I ended up with the 17. Happy to have the extra power, just trying to figure everything out LOL.

Will look into GSA this winter and will do the smart wheel as soon as I can. I find the touch screen for volume control is challenging when you're trying to do everything else on the boat.

Tige22i - that thruster looks awesome!

            !
try the auto volume control feature. I started using it this summer and the feature is nice. This is how I set mine up. I set min speed for all speakers at 7 mph and max at 10. Then when sitting still, I muted all speakers except towers, set master to 95 and turned up tower for desired max volume level when below 7mph then turned up each speaker to balance with the towers.

Then for at speed volume I set everything to max volume leve for a good balanced sound.

Doin this seldom requires me to touch master volume when rider falls.

It takes a bit of playing with each speaker and speed, but it’s well worth it

Congrats on the new to you boat! All this smart wheel talk has me super curious to see one in action at the next West Coast Tigé Owner’s reunion this September... Between that and GSA and stern thrusters I am just trying to keep up with the Jones’ here! LMAO. Love hearing about these boats and where they are headed! The future is exciting for the industry.
