    TAPS fried

    Hey folks,

I have a 2002 23V with TAPS2 - So my TAPS has been non functional for about 6 months now, and the mechanic is trying to get all the parts. The switch in the throttle is gone, the wires are split and it "seems" the black box under the dash is toast.

I'll let the mechanic fix it all, but right now TAPS is fully retracted and what I'd like is to somehow manually push it down to about 4 or 1/2 way. Does anyone know how I can do that? A big hammer on the plate?

    Thanks!

is yours electric or hydraulic? It seems you could jump power to the pump or motor and run it down then it should stay.

      Hey Kona,

Hydraulic - do you know where the connections to the pump are?

Let me check mine this morning. But out of your box under the dash there should 3 or 4 wires heading back to your pump. They 3 small ones come from the switch and the others go to the pump.

You should be able to push out the pin that holds the ram to the taps plate, and spin the ram by hand.
This will let you put the taps plate into a different location.
The Taps 2 is an actuator. If you look at it as a fancy nut and bolt, the nut would be what you see on the outside that is chrome. And the bolt is the worm gear that is spun by a DC motor
Tige, it's a way of life!

Not on the hydraulic one. It is an actual cylinder.

may Taps2 is electric. If you’re is hydraulic, then your sol for manually adjusting it.

Years ago some of the trim tabs put on Moomba and Supra boats were manually adjustible. As a temporary fix use a threaded rod with double nuts and/or a turn-buckle to adjust.

SD mine is different than yours but in the motor compartment you should find a little pump motor. Follow your Hydro lines from your ram on the taps unit to it. From there you should be able to figure out which is forward and rev (up or down) Pull 12 vdc from the battery to it and it should run.

Didn't TAPS go electric about in 2004 and then back to hydraulic a couple years later?

                      Good luck Surfdad!

Thanks Kona! I will see if I can find the pump motor and hit it with some juice.

                        @ petrey10 - I'll try and snap some photo's if it works!

@ TallTige - Long time no hear! Thanks for the well wishes.

That "black box," the RELAY, is stupid expensive. Get ready to take it in the booty sans lube when ya go replace that......Maybe if you bring your own lube to the parts counter they'll be more gentle!? :-)
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

my black box at least clicks so I wouldn't think it would be the box causeing the problem... the motor just doesn't move at all.... I tried to find my motor but it must be packed in somewhere tight cause I couldn't really find it on my 20i...

Box clicking makes NO differrence at all. It could very well be bad and click just the same--mine did, that's why it took me a while to definitively diagnose it was the relay.
