    Tune up to extend summer

I live in Ontario where the season is very short. Im tired of losing weeks with my boat every summer due to mechanic issues.

I’m trying to come up with a list of maintenance items I can do each season to ensure boat doesn’t go down in middle of summer. I have a 2007 rz2 with a marine power 5.7

Here is my list so far:

    1) oil and filter change
    2) new fuel filter
    3) new impeller
    4) new cap and rotor
    5) change all spark plugs
    6) chance spark wires
    7) chance all ballast bag impellers

Anything else that should be added? Again I’m not looking for the minimum I need to do but the maximum I can do to ensure a smooth summer.

Just based on some of my recent experiences, I would add checking and cleaning all electrical contacts for corrosion and tightness. There seem to be a ton, but a few examples are the starter, neutral safety switch, fuel pump connections, everything at the batteries(/battery), etc.
Also worth checking v-drive and transmission fluids.

      Here is my current list:

      1) oil and filter
      2) fuel filter
      3) water pump impeller
      4) cap and rotor
      5) spark plugs
      6) spark plug wire set
      7) impeller of ballast bag pump
      8) check to see when to change fluids like v-drive and transmission fluid
      9) checking and cleaning all electrical contacts for corrosion and tightness. Some examples are starter, neutral safety switch, fuel pump connection, all battery connections

      Anything else to add?

-You can run your impeller safely upwards of 100 hrs. Depending what you average per year it doesn't need to be changed out yearly.
-Spark plugs definitely don't need to be done every year.
-oil changes ever 50 hours and or at the time of winterization
-I don't know why you'd need to replace you cap and rotor every year too.
-no need to change spark plug wires every year.
If you need to change some of these things yearly I'd say you have some bigger issues. Most of these boats see a lot less overall use than a vehicle motor and you aren't replacing the above parts on a yearly basis.

If anything I'd just recommend having some of these things on hand. I always keep my old impeller on the boat as a back up if needed. Depending on the last time it was swapped out you may want to replace the belt and again keep the spare in the boat.

I know I’m overdoing it but two of past three summers the tige has been in the shop soooo much during our short season. Want to prevent that at all costs for next summer.

What type of issues do you have?

              Backfire noise at 3000
RPMs and no forward momentum. Happens Intermittently. Boat works for 2 days then won’t work on day 3, 3 of the 4 ballast pumps failing at once, bilge broken, heater broken, speedo and paddle wheel broken, steering cable...I know some of these are wear and tear issues but they take up chunks of time to fix at the busiest time of the season when it’s 30 degrees out and sunny and I’m waiting a week to see a mechanic.
