It shouldn't be slippery. My guess is the previous owner coated it with the wrong stuff. Post up a pic.

I am over it and will be line-x and foam pad on top as soon as I free up some boat money. I am starting the I hate teak page on facebook come join.
Same for me.. I washed it clean, sanded it with an air-driven long file and 150 grit. Then I oiled it liberally, let dry, oil it again.. let dry. Then oil it after every trip for about 5 trips. Mine looks exactly like his. The Watco stuff is excellent.

Team Allen....I think you are right looks like there is some sort of clear gloss on top of the deck. I am redoing it...started sanding last night. I will post pics when I'm done.

I bet they put this stuff on.
            Cetol

A lot of people use it on their sail boats, but it is slipperier than dog snot when wet. I also feel like the wood always looks a bit more orange with the Cetol when dry.

Very well could have been. Whatever it was it's gone now. I sanded her down last night and got the first coat of Watco on there. Looks awesome already. I will post the pics soon.

COuld have been Tung Oil as well. It is very similar to Teak Oil but has a parafin base to it, leaving a very slippery waxxy surface.

I would be careful not to sand the teak to a super smooth finish, leave it a little rough.

I used a belt sander and took it down to super smooth, now it is a little slick.

My dogs and wife are not happy.

As already stated, the belt sander may be too aggressive, I have some staples starting to show from going over my deck a few times with 80 grit.

I love the oiled teak look but after my recent boat purchase im having a change of heart. My tige is black and purple with purple accents in the interior. The previous owner decide he wanted to throw in the towel so to speak and rhino lined the swim step in a matching purple. I love it! Ive got tons of compliments on it and the color of it looks great in the watet. Not to mention there is absolutely no upkeep! Ive never seen anyone else do this to a swim step and id like to think im the only one but I doubt it haha. Anyways if u guys are curious as to how it looks, ill find a way to get a pic up in the next few days. My phone decided it wanted to swim in the lake last week and the camera stopped working..

My teak deck was really bad when I bought, and I all did was belt sand, vacuum, and a light pressure wash. All I do now is a quick vacuum when dry and brush on teak oil fairly liberally. Let it sit for 5 minutes and wipe off/down after that. few times a year and the deck still looks great. K.I.S.S. !!
