Teak Swim Platform care

Hi, new Tige owner here. Just wondering what everyone uses to clean, oil and finish their teak platforms. How do they get that rich dark luster I see on some teak swim platforms? Also where do you purchase your supplies.

I depends on how beat up you deck is....

I just use sand paper and teak oil an I get it from any boat shop.

Its actually in really good shape just want to keep it that way. I was told to use a cleaner as well....doesnt sound like you use a cleaner just that sand paper.

I have never used any cleaners. We've had our tiger for 5 years and our old sea-ray for 20 years before that.

It's really up yo you, if you keep the oil on it and don't let it go you should be fine.

I believe West Marine carries Travaco Te-Ka brand cleaners. Works very well for stripping the teak down to a natural finish. Follow directions carefully or you will be repeating the process. DO NOT get this stuff on you! It is an acid and will burn like crazy. Its best to remove the platform to clean, this stuff can be messy. After using cleaner allow platform to dry, give it atleast a full 24 hours and as much "bake in the sun time" as possible. Any moisture in the wood will cause it to look dark and cloudy after you apply teak oil rather than the golden color you are looking for. After it is completely dry, any scratches or dings can be lighly sanded out. Apply a good oil, try to purchase a natural quality teak oil. Some oils have additives that will make it look like a cheap picnic bench.
First time is a pain, and honestly it will last a long time if kept covered, oiled and as dirt free as possible.

I use stuff called star i think? cant believe i forgot what its called. but ill find out this weekend. Gettin the the lake first time this season on friday!

I've always used star brite 3 step cleaner/brighnter and oil. worked great.

To start the year: I sand sand sand. let it sit in the hot sun, oil, hot sun, oil, hot sun, oil, hot sun.... then oil every 4-5 times out. a few times a year I wash with soap and then oil....

wash..let dry..sand..wash..let dry....Watco teak oil from home depot. I have tried a few some of the ones mentioned above watco works the same last as long (not very in my case)I dont bother with a sealer because it didnt make a diiference for me.
I am over it and will be line-x and foam pad on top as soon as I free up some boat money. I am starting the I hate teak page on facebook come join.

I don't sand ... just clean and oil every 3rd time out and mine is doing very well. I buy any teak oil I can find.

I did the sand down once and just keep on top of applying oil as soon as it looks like its dry. So far been very easy. You clean you seats, windows take two minutes and dump some teak oil on it. Will say my boat is stored in the garage so that helps too.

I do the same as Chadster. A lot of the acidic cleaners raise the grain, and sanding is necessary anyhow.
