I bought my 1997 2150 a few years ago, and while I love the boat, it is too big for me. It's great to stick 8 people in and take off for a few hours, but for pulling kids skiing, it simply produces too large a wake at 26-30mph. Having said that, if I wait a few years the kids will love it to wakeboard (my kids are 6 and 8). So, what are my Tige options (with walkthrough) in the 2005ish 30ish range? Any input appreciated. I want to stay direct drive...

roomy boat vs smaller wake

I can see that no one is replying here.
There are several questions to ask here, similar to questions I wish others had asked me on a prior boat purchase:
What exactly makes the wake too large?
What are you comparing it to? Meaning what boat would make an acceptable wake?
How many years until the kids want a larger wake? (wakeboarding/surfing)
I'll admit I don't know you or your family's needs.
Are you better off keeping what you have? It is a direct drive with a good passenger/cargo/ballast capacity. (according to the specs provided here) I a few years it will allow you to take your kids and their friends out with a DD wake which should be favorable for skiing.
I am coming from a Moomba Boomerang which is a slalom boat (closed bow) to a Tige 2100V. I switched after 2 1/2 years, not so much for the wake but for the passenger capability and freeboard. We will be able to surf or wakeboard with ballast, etc with several friends aboard.
Are you sure you aren't chasing the right boat for right now? (for the kids)
I wish I had someone ask me more questions before I bought the Moomba. It is a great boat but not what I really needed/wanted long term.
I think the Tige 2100V we recently purchased will better serve our needs.
Choose what is best for you and your family long term.

I'd say smaller boat, smaller wake with the option to make a larger wake when necessary.
I have a 2004 Switch V, it's the same boat as the current 20V, and IMO gives you the best of both worlds. I think it will hold 9 adults, or 4-6 adults and several kids. It's got a great ski wake, not as good as a 20i, but one of the best, if not the best you'll find in a V-Drive, and it gives you a better seating arrangement, that a 20i (or inboard) offers. When you want a larger wake, you can use the taps plate, and if you need larger then that, you can add ballast. I built in 1400 lbs of ballast for surfing, it was very easy to do, and cost less then $500.

I have a 2002 20V that makes a solid wake with ballast, but can be way toned down using the taps and draining ballast. Dont buy a boat for you kids now, buy it for them when they are older and will want to wake potential. And 26-30mph is way to fast lol, keep it slower, especially for little kids. when i teach i pull at about 18-19mph till they get comfortable then bump it up to 20-21mph once they get it. When i could ride (before i destroyed my back) i rode at about 22-23mph at 70-75 feet.Joey - Red 20V Riders Edition

You will get into surfing, and the V-drive has more wake potential than an I-drive. V-drive will be much safer than a direct drive(right out the back) the props underneath on the V-drive (As well as the I-drive) which makes surfing possible And you cant get 2005ish boat with a direct drive like i think you talking about.

Direct Drive and "i" drive are the same thing. "i" drive just an alternative term to Direct drive.
When he was talking about 26-30mph he was talking about skiing, not wakeboarding.
Any boat with 8 people in it is going to have a large wake for slow speed skiing.Common Sense is not so Common
Looking for fat chicks for long walks, romance, cheap buffets, and BALLAST.

Get what you need for now, but surfing is the all around best for everybody...... go big bigger biggest for surfing.... if you haven't been yet find someone on here and go with them before you do anything else..... There is only so much one can do while surfing but everybody can play... with a lot less pain....

Excellent comments, folks.
Oldeboy, you perhaps said it best - "sure you're not chasing the right boat for right now..."
Re what I'm comparing it to ... good question, as it makes me realize my comparison isn't realistic - I'm thinking Mastercraft 197 or X7, which of course is an entirely different boat. That I even consider that comparison really just shows I don't know what I want. recently, my boat was parked next to an X7 and it looked like mine could eat that boat with room to spare.
I may be suffering from "grass is always greener" complex. I've decided to take it out again 3x before I try to make any further decisions.
For now, I love my 2150 WT. It rocks. Not only that, my motor has a soundtrack (black scorpion - check it out on Mercruiser site).
chillin in the bayou...

If you just want a SKI boat maybe you could look for a smaller and older dd like a stars-n-stripes or something like that. I'm not sure of your financial or storage situation, but I see LOADS of really nice, really cheap SKI oriented boats around.
....if that's even an option, just a thought????Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

With that said if you want room for passengers and will use it recreational as a wakeboard boat and maybe some skiing I would recommend a V drive where the engine is in the rear of the boat verses a direct drive where motor is in the center of the boat. A direct drive typically will have a smaller wake than a Vdrive but if Wake=e boarding is the main sport off the boat then a V drive would do.
Prop location is under the boat and the Direct Drive and Vdrive props are basically in the same location under the boat and set back so with swim platform on boat you are isolated well from prop if wakesurfing comes to play.
I have an 07 20V and it has a reasonable recreational ski wake and a wakeboard wake that would be good to start on but over time you would want to add ballast in the back of the boat.
There are many variables that you need to evaluate everyone on this forum have their own tastes and preferences. If I had enough space I would have bout either a 22VE or a RZ2 in the Tige line. I would probably go with the 22VE over the RZ but it is a matter of personal preference. I went with the 20V because we normally have 4-6 people on board so room is not our issue but fitting in my garage was. The 20V fits and others would not and overall I like others am very happy with my 20V even though it is smaller. Hope this helps. The best way to make a decision is test drive the boats and compare from there with a list of what is important to you.
