I will stick with a gasser. Plenty of power for our needs in this market segment.

river when have you actually seen black soot on a newer diesel? Don't knock it till you try it... just cause you drive down the interstate and see black on semi's doesn't mean its the same as it would be in newer cars and boats

I would take a diesel with Bluetec or something similar. No smell, great torque, runs forever and way better efficiency.

So even without the smell and soot what about the small power band? It seems the prop would have to be very agressive to overcome that part right? Or has the power band issue been overcome?

Everyday that I work on them.

The new diesels are better but they still smell and there is still soot.(Even the brand new 2011 Ford diesel I had the joy of driving the other day)

They will never run DPF on a boat in our market segment anyway or any boat application.(Creates too much heat) So they wont be cleaner than an auto application.

Thinking about the progrss that diesels have made, it seems like it would be great to have them in boats. But think about how they have been used in the past- larger cruiser type boats that mostly travel at a constant speed. Efficient for moving heavier boats. The cost premium is very significant, water pollution is an issue (see what happened to 2 strokes), still noisier and smellier than gas. My truck is diesel and I love the power, but I can't see it in my boat.
