New Prop

Ok guys, time for another newbie to get some advice from the pros...

So we took our first ride this spring out on Travis and it was a fantastic afternoon (I'll post pics on the other thread), but there was an incident...

When we were getting ready to load up the wife accidentally got the prop in the ramp.

So now to play 20 questions:
Do I need a new prop or am I ok? I'll post a pic, but it is bent pretty good.

Did she likely bend the driveshaft too or no? man I hope not

IF it turns out I need a new prop. Do I need any special tools to do it? Looks like there's a cotter pin and then a bolt. Is there anything more to it than that?

AND if I need a new prop, what would you recommend: size, brand, and how much will it cost me?

Well for sure your going to need a new prop.

You need a prop puller to get it off.

Chpthril is a good source of information and can get you a smokin deal. PM him with any questions.

Install a new prop and take her for a spin. You will know right away if the shaft was bent.

Most likely you will just need a prop. Bending the shaft usually occurs with higher speed impacts.

We had our prop fixed 3 times last year. I thought my prop was a gonner on one occation. Nope....sent to prop shop and good as new for 1/2 the price of a new one.

Most props can be repaired.

Or you can go this way.

Just make sure its a good shop or you might think you bent the shaft too.

I don't know what prop you have but, chpthril had a great price on an Acme 537.

Buy the prop with weekend saver kit from chpthril which comes with the puller(i believe). Then send your prop out for repair and you will have a spare!!!!

Do I need a new prop or am I ok? I'll post a pic, but it is bent pretty good. Props can be fixed, but it does depend on the manufacturer, the material it's made from, how it was made, and who is fixing it. It may cost about as much a prop as it would be to replace.

Did she likely bend the driveshaft too or no? man I hope not Just smacking the ramp while loading, I doubt it did an more then bent the prop's blades, but if it's a stainless steel prop, it could have bent the shaft as the SS props are so much harder then the Nibral props.

IF it turns out I need a new prop. Do I need any special tools to do it? Looks like there's a cotter pin and then a bolt. Is there anything more to it than that? You will need a means to pull the prop. The 2 most common methods are a harmonic puller and C-clamp puller.

AND if I need a new prop, what would you recommend: size, brand, and how much will it cost me? Brand = ACME, What prop do you have know? Do you run a lot of ballast? Are you experiencing any cavitation or poor hole-shot with current prop? If you think you may benefit from a prop upgrade, contact the folks @ ACME Marine and they will gather some info and make a recommendation.

Not sure of the mfg of my current prop. It's not stainless. Brass colored. size it says on the prop is 537 13.5x16 VL.

chp, I haven't really been behind the boat enough to tell ya much. Wakeboarded a few times last fall right after we got it. Seemed to pop us all out fine. This spring I'm planning to get a bunch of ballast sacs and learn to surf, so whatever prop works best for that I guess is what I'd want.

I bent my strut on my first boat and never realized it until the dealer noticed that it was all to one side. That was my 2002 that had a stainless prop and I had a prop strike on the ramp. The shaft was not bent. At least that is when I think I did it because it was like 3-4 months later that my dealer noticed it, and I had no other prop strikes. I wish I had a brass prop that would have bent and saved me the cost of replacing the strut. The boat ran fine with a bent strut.

we just got our boat also and only have had it in the water a few times. my dealer recommended the "weekend saver" also. spare prop and puller tools.

On lake Travis, we would like to make a trip out there this summer, maybe we can meet u with you? We have never been. We will be coming from HOuston aera and camping somewhere. I will start a new thread when it gets closer.

Ok, took my boat over to Nettles and they're going to straighten out the prop for me. Thanks for the tip AJ! They seem like good guys over there. I'm excited to see what kinda work they do.

One more thing... when I add my 2nd battery, do I replace the current on/off switch with the Perko switch or do I add the Perko to the existing? Seems like I wouldn't need the old one once I add the Perko...
