Oppinions Needed!! Trailer wheels and tires

    Hey Yall..
Looking to put 18in Rims on my trailer and i see alot of 20's and some 18's..The question is .. First..what size tires are going on the 18s to fit: the fender and are they a upgraded "load rated" tire or standard "car" tire??

    Any help is appriciated..Thank you

Is this for a new boat or your existing boat? Are you putting the boat into a garage? The 20's will make it a little harder to put a boat into any garage IMO.

I have a trailer with the 20's and they are Goodyear Eagle's that appear to be car tires but their load rating is like 3,200 lbs per tire. They might actually be light truck tires. I think mine are 275/50's if I remember right. David is right, the 20's won't allow your boat to fit into a standard 7' tall garage door.

I can understand if you bought a trailer that had nice rims and tires on it but to upgrade I guess I just don't get it... is it so it looks better parked and the launch or sitting in front of the house? Don't get me wrong I like blinged out trailers too but it will be the last thing I do if ever to my set up.

            Mike,
I bought a new boat last summer on a Boatmate trailer and wanted to put 18's on it before taking it off the lot. I called Boatmate with the trailer serial number; I was told I would need to replace both axles and install wider fenders. This may not be the case for you, but I still would advise you to check with your trailer manufacturer. Let us know what you do, plus pics.

No its not for the bling... my rims and tires need replacing bad.. i think one rim is out of round.. and when the boat was trailerd here it shreaded the tire to the metal cords so to buy the stock trailer rim and 4 tires.. I have the oppertunity for alittle more $ i can get the 18s.. I do get what your saying though

Makes sense...I didn't change anything and won't. It would have been a minimal upgrade at purchase if it would have worked out.

I just believe from a safety standpoint taller sidewalk is the way to go. First time you are not paying close attention it will be your wheel that hits the curb not the tire. If you hit a pothole with low pro tires, again your wheel will take the beating. Impo, spend the money on the boat or just get some good looking 14's or 15's.

The 18's and 20's do have the rim protector on them to keep from rubbing the curb, the tire compounds on them will also be better for braking and will hold a higher speed rating. 20's definitely handle better than a big old sidewall too. The main reason I went with my trailer is that it has 4 wheel independent suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes.

My Z1 came with a boatmate trailer equipped with 255/45Z R18 tires. Why they installed a Z rated tire on a trailer is beyond me. I believe Z rated tires have a unlimited speed rating.
When they are wore out I plan on putting a normal 15" rim and trailer tire combo on it. I like they way they help cushion the ride better, The 18's sure look nice though
