    Water Sports Helmet

Hi All, the season is upon us again, and I promissed myself that this year I would have a couple helmets on board for riders. I think there was a thread last year regarding a group buy. Anyone have any recomendations on this?

IMO...don't get one unless your riding rails/boxes.

We've had good luck with pro-tec....I got to see the new Liquid Force helmets last weekend and they were very nice for $39.95.

How come? I am thinking mainly of my kids, but I would like to hear the cons. Thanks

I disagree totally. I have had some hard falls and suffered some serious headaches. Plus, there is a potential for ear injuries. If a helmet makes you feel safer, why not use/wear it?

the only difficulty with helmets imo is that they can sometimes impede head movement.. but if you get one that fits right it shouldn't be a problem.. as a person that has had multiple concussions during wakeboarding and snowboarding i will always encourage wearing a helmet

Last year, we took my son's friend out wakeboarding to learn and he did not let go of the rope when falling, suffice to say he tore 3 muscles in his arm and had to have it in a splint for 6 weeks, pretty painful injury, but it all resolved without surgery. After that I, bought helmets, one of each size pretty much, all pro-tech. for those with size 7 3/4 to 8 cap size, a pro tech may not fit you well. I reccommend a Gath helmet. They are made in Australia and sold through murrays.com. The pro-techs are reasonable but the Gath is pricey. Still better than a head injury. My kids balked at first but after I insisted and one of them took a hard fall, everyone pretty much agreed it was a good idea. The only other issue is if you ride past folks with a helmet, they stop and wait to see you if you are going to pull some big air trick. LOL

Definitively get a helmet. I have a hyperlite byerly helmet and love it, it has snap on ear flaps. I have taken several hard falls with it and with out it. I will never ride again without a helmet. FYI, I moutain bike without a helmet and apres ski with out one, so I am not a helmet nazi. I have taken a few diggers trying new tricks and have blown off my ear covers and wakeboard in the process, if I was not wearing a helmet, I definitely would had inner ear trauma.

The most common argument against wearing helmets is that the increased surface area causes higher deceleration forces, offsetting the protection gained with the cushioning.

I rung my bell a few times in years past without a helmet, and had no dingers after I switched to wearing one last year. It makes me feel more confident, as well. So I say yes.

I would say that if you do wear one, keep the chinstap off if possible. Just becasue this prevents "bucketing".

                            Fact, that's why I don't have one

Plus the aerodynamics & drag of the helmet keep me from going as big as usual.
