    NO FLAMES, just an idea

Ok, no flames on this idea, just an idea.

I am getting ready for boating season, and last year we only had one drain plug. Every year there will be several stories about people leaving the drain plug out, ect ect. So I went to Lowes for a back up, (I know I can order one, but Lowes is closer, cheaper and easier). So I was looking for an emergency plug, the plug on the 08 22VE is 1/2 inch with nl thread, so I found a small 1/2 x 2 inch pvc pipe with male/male thread and a female cap. 1.20 cost. I have epoxied, just for saftey, the cap on. It is small and light weight, will keep in the glove box, for just in case.

So, as I was walking out, I came across another idea. Here is where the "Aw that stupid,.....but actually, it might work,......hey that is not a bad idea."

If you break down a plug to its function, it is to keep the water out, when on the lake and release the water from the boat when not on the lake, the problem is to remember to put it in every single time, it can come loose, you tighten it too much and it is a bare to get out, or you forget to leave it out and you start your own ecosystem inside your hull, and I think someone mentioned that mice can gain intrance in the winter time.

So the idea was to get a small brass faucet, put some teflon on it and tighten it up, so the faucet faces down. So you simply twist it closed when going and untwist it when you finish. If you forget to twist it closed, when the bilge kicks on, hop out and close it. It is always there. The only down side I see is the inner diameter is smaller, they have a gas valve, with same 1/2 diameter through out, but it had the standard gas valve, which to me could get accidently open easier.

Anyway, stupid idea, my wife made fun of me driving around with a 50k boat with faucet, but I am seriously considering it.

Until I get made fun of.

The faucet is actually much smaller than the standard outside water faucet, I don't really know what you would use it for, but it is about 1/2 the size. Next time at HomeDepot/Lowes take a look, maybe I can get them to stamp Tige on it to make it legitimate.

Two potential issues I see are that it may be unable to install it without removing the TAPS plate (the handle looks pretty tall so that it can't spin around while screwing it in without hitting the plate) and it may interfere with the full motion of the TAPS plate once installed.

If those are not interference issues, then it should work.

X2 what Dingle said. Clearance may be and issue with the taps plate.

The only other concern I would have is if the valve would open due to vibration or turbulence.

Only way to find out is to give it a try...let us know how it goes...

Dont think that would work on my boat. IIRC the plug is just barely above the TAPS plate and with the TAPS in full up position that valve is going to stick out too far and interfere with the plate.

make sure the faucet does not go open while you are on the lake riding.

What about just a straight ball valve?

Something like this? You will probably need a M-M fitting in between though. Just a thought.

A ball valve would have a much greater chance of opening while under way than a gate valve

I checked mine and it will not work with Taps in full up either. Good Idea Though

I will check it out when I get it back from "summerization".

The vibrating issue would not bother me so much, because, if it would vibrate enough to untwist the valve, then it would had been plenty to unscrew the normal plug, plus, it it does come open, simple twist it close.

Hopefully will post some pics next week.

                          Thanks for the open minds.

When you think about it, having a plug that can make or break you literally, seems very archaic and not well thought out. My car does not have a switch that I must crawl up under the exhaust every time to make sure the car won't explode when I drive it.

Maybe the inventors of the boat drain plug was also in charge of the "Lost" put the password to keep the island from exploding thingy.
