We had a thread on this last year. I personally like the Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic. I change my oil every 20 to 30 hours or three months. I never let the boat sit longer than three months with out having a fresh oil change. Lots of reason behind this. I am going to do a oil explanation on my web page when I get the new page up and going in the Tech-Advise section. This has been a topic of discussion for a long time. I have used this oil from day one. The engine has 225 hours now it runs strong burn not even a drop of oil. I am seeing a lot of other engines burning oil. GM says that is normal (bogus!!). Does your car burn oil unless something is wrong with it. That is another argument I have. Anyways to not drag this out you can use a CARQUEST oil filter blue line or NAPA filter Gold line both are built by WIX filters which is a much better filter than the factory Merc filter and it is cheaper. Most of the Merc engines use and early Model GM filter like 1980 time frame or a Ford filter. Take the old one with you to the parts store and tell they what it is for and ask them for the larger version that holds a higher oil capacity. This gives you more filter surface and a better filter action on the engine. The reason the marine manufactures use the shorter filter is because of space when their is really plenty of space for the larger filter.

I own no vehicles under 100,000. miles, my 1983 van had 390,000. miles when I sold it , it is still going no oil con sumption 3000 mile service intervals, never had engine apart.
Current van has 285000. miles no oil consumption, our ski team boat has 6.0l 1000 hrs no oil consumption used under extream use have always serviced by manufactures recomendation and only ever used Kendal oil and best quality filters.
The only other critical issue is the correct weight, never very from the specs, our city police department was buying bulk oil 20w 40 for all their vehicles and started having engine failure in the police cruisers, all todays engines are use different materials and tighter torlerances and thicker weight wouldnt flow causeing the rocker arms to come off because the lifters wouldnt pump up.

Ok I am glad you said NAPA Gold Filters because I have them on my Tundra and Camry and have had zero problems. The mercruiser website says the best oil for my engine is Quick Silver Synthetic Blend 4 Cycle oil... below is the link. I just wanted to know what everyone is using before the season starts here. I usually buy from NAPA by the case so hopefully they can order this for me.
