I have a 12" Punch mounted under the drivers helm in that location and it doesn't sound very good at all. How do I tell if my sub is a free air sub or not. I think that might be my problem. If it is not, how do I go about building a sub enclosure to fit the back of the sub?

The punch subs are not for free air aplication you could build a box or for the same price buy a Kicker comp 12 which is marine grade and drop it in the hole because its free air capable. They are about 89 bucks.

        Thanks Gardy,

Do you think that my Punch amp will power the new Kicker? It is only a 200 watt sub?

I bought a box and mounted it to the wall behind the sub. If you use a box make sure it will fit in the door of the compartment, the door is alot smaller than the compartment.

Pony It might be okay the rms on a kicker comp 12 is 150 watts and max is 300 so if you are within that range you are probably okay.

How do I go about building the enclosure?

I'm trying to picture how I would go about making the enclosure for the sub. How do I secure it to the wall? Will someone please help me and assist me in doing this project. Thinking about using a 10" sub. Thanks, Adam

I made my box out of MDF and covered it with marine carpet. I attached it to the back of the wall were the sub is located with a small corner bracket and a short screw.

you could build out of stock 3/4 in plywood. the mdf may go to peices if it gets wet. Course you could glass in the box if you want....

This may be to simple of a solution but you can buy a box in kit form from Walmart for about $35.00 and all you do is glue it together. It is carpeted with the cutout for your size sub. As long as it fits through the hatch, you will be in luck. I am considering this option when I put in the sub. Good luck...

dont forget that you need to waterproof your boxes! If you dont, they'll absorb moisture and fall apart.

coat the wood underneath the felt. epoxy or truck bedliner works well.

Thanks for all the replys. I had a local shop custom design and install a box. They did a really good job and only charged me about $100. He had to put the box together inside the hatch....I guess its not coming out. He did water seal the wood and then carpeted over it. The carpet is a great match for the boat carpet. He also worked on my two amps and let me tell you the stereo sounds great. Thanks again.
