    V drive vs. transmission

Ok since i was confused on this subject for a brief moment, I will share it with everyone else. This is about drive ratios, in the transmission and the v drive. Now some of this info is repeat info but some is info that has not been formally touched on these forums that I have found.

There has been some speculation on the fact that blue drives mean 1.46:1 and the black drives are 1:1. there are two tags on the drive train that should state the drive ratio. one will be the drive ratio of the transmission and one will be the drive ratio of the v drive.the tag on the transmission is on the starboard side in the middle of the transmission, and the vdrive tag is on the bow side in the front, and is about the size of a business card. To tell which drive ration you have check both tags. To check the v drive tag you will have to remove the center seat box.

Tige started putting a gear reduction in 2003. But in some cases like my case I have a 2001 21v that has a 1.46:1 gear reduction. There are two places that this gear reduction can take place. Tige uses a transmission directly off the bell housing, and then into the actual v drive. It seems to me that the transmissions tige use are all 1:1, the gear reduction occurs in the v-drive. Now as everyone knows the blue v-drives are typically the 1.46:1 gear reduction v-drives, and the black v-drives are typically the 1:1 v-drives.

For the props choices on these drives from sea level up to 3000-4000 ft. People tend to say that the 3 blade ACME 911 prop is the best all around prop for the black 1:1 drive. And the Acme 1235 4 blade prop is the best all around prop for the blue gear reduced 1.46:1 drive.

Very good sir. That is exactly how it works, and those props are perfect for weighted down boats. I'm glad that you didn't buy the 911 and then find out later it's completely wrong.

Depending on what you are doing. If you are surfing 80% of the time you need the 1235. That will certainly require your engine to pull a lot of RPM though. If you are Wake-boarding and single ski most of the time I don't think that a 1235 is the prop for your boat. You may be better with a 537 or a 1691. The other thing you have to work against is the clearance of the prop from the bottom of the boat. A 1235 may be to close to the bottom of the boat. You want at least a 3/4 inch clearance or you take a big chance of burning of the Gel Coat from the bottom of the boat behind the prop. I PM you with more info.

The cool thing about the ACME 1235 that makes it such a great prop upgrade from the stock prop, such as the 537 or your current 13.5 x 17.5 OJ, is that the 1235 is both larger in diameter and down in pitch. In theory, going up in diameter will drop the engine RPM's due to the increased load. On the flip side, going down in pitch will increase the engine RPM's as it allows the engine to wind up easier. When changing from the 537 to the 1235, the change in RPM is almost a wash, with maybe a very slight increase in RPM and a very small loss of top end speed. With your OJ being a higher picth then the 537, i'd say that 1235 would result in the normal RPM's increase that would be expected from down pitching.

You may be better with a 537 or a 1691
Cant find a 1691 on either of my price sheets, do you mean by chance mean the 1619 or the 1591? The 13.75 pitch of the 1619 is too low and would really wind up the engine. The .075 cup V's the 1235's .105 will result in lost bite as well. The 1591 is .5" larger in Dia then the OJ and 1.5" lower in pitch. I'd say the results could be close to that of a 537 to 1235 swap.

Just an FYI, looks of the other thread, ACME already recommended the 1235 to him. http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11536

Yes 1591 typo. I guess I should read before hitting the send button.

I agree, the 1591 looks like it may be a suitable upgrade to his current OJ, and the 1235 being the next level. Like you say, it comes down to how the boat will be used the most in order to determine which will be the best.
