I am looking to buy a diesel. I have been looking at several F-250's with the 6.0. Are the rumors about the 6.0's true? I know a couple of people with them and niether have had any trouble. Anyone with first hand experience?

aj,
I have an 07 F350 6.0 and my buddy has an 06 F350. He has 58,000 miles and the only problem that has occured is a bad fuel pump. I have 39,000 miles and had a leak in my oil pan gasket that was repaired six months ago. Both repairs were covered under warantee. On mine I should tell you that is was a 22 hour repair because of the fact that in order to work on the motor they have to remove the cab and the gasket was one of the problems that plagued the early 6.0.
The powertrain warantee on the 6.0's is 7 years/100,000 miles.
I would stay clear of the 03-04's but for the most part the later ones are pretty darn good.
I would not buy a used 6.0 without taking it to a dealership and having them do a diagnostic check to find out if it has had a chip. If it has had one run like hell.Formertigeowners.com

Have you checked out the Ford 250/350 with a V10 gas engine?

I have 150's and a 350 with the 6.4, and the 6.4 is a great tow vehicle motor and just doesn't break down much (so far). I have had it two years (59,000 miles) and no major problems, just oil changes - no brakes yet either, the brakes on the 250/350's are alot more durable than the 150's.
Diesel is the best way to go for towing and long term reliability, but the new gas engines have come a long way.
The 6.0 had so many problems early in production that Ford and Navistar (the manufacturer of the 6.0) went to court over the warranty work, and now have parted company. So I would be careful buying a 6.0. As for the tuner, when you put a performance tuner on the 6.0 the increased compression would stretch the head bolts and create problems.Last edited by RockRig; 11-04-2009, 02:57 PM.

I have an 05 Excursion with the 6.0. It pulls great and is very strong. I love the torqshift tranny that it is paired to, and have heard the tranny is nearly bulletproof. My engine has had no major problems, blew an alternator, had a fuel filter get clogged, a few minor things you might expect.
I now have 108K miles on it and at 102K I got the same oil leak that was mentioned above. 22hours of work to fix an oil change is pretty disappointing when you are 2,000 miles out of warranty. At the local Ford shop the repair was quoted at $2800. So I am a little mad about that. To be honest the leak is mild, so I have just let it drip for now and keep an eye on the oil level. I have 3,000 miles since the last oil change and it has not even budged on the dipstick, so I will just keep that money and buy boat stuff with it.
Given the way that Ford is switching engines every 10 minutes, I have made a decision to dump them. Nothing can replace the Excursion, so I will keep it until it is nearly dead, but my next truck is going to be a duramax Chevy. And very soon.
The Duramax plant will be closed from December until May or so, so they are going to get pretty rare in the new market for a while. Our local dealer tells me he asked for 20 of them last month and only got 2. I expect that with the supply of Chevy and GMC diesels being slim in the near future, it will hold it's value better than a Ford as well.Be excellent to one another.

Dont by the superduty with the V10!!!!! its not worth it, youll get horrible milage and even worse towing. Im a big powerstroke guy, check out powerstroke.org its my other forum i love
I would go for a 99-03 F250/F350 with the 7.3L. Its not as easy to pull big HP numbers, but its ridiculously reliable. The 6.0's have issues with the EGR coolers and if you tune them you almost immediately need headstuds to keep it reliable. 6.0's are nice motors if your willing to get the initial work done, Ie. headstuds, EGR delete, and then some custom SCT tuningand exhaust. i like my 7.3, pulls the boat great, I have a chip, 5" turbo back exhaust, aFe stage 2 intake, hpop crossover and hopefully a garrett ballbearing turbo soon
any questions those guys on powerstroke . org are great and they know a ton.Joey - Red 20V Riders Edition

Forgot to mention...just like somebodyelse said, don't chip your 6.0 or you risk some severe motor damage.
The other option I am considering is a 2003 Powerstroke with the 7.3. Pulls plenty for most people and those junkies on the diesel sites are still lamenting Ford went away from an incredibly reliable motor.Be excellent to one another.

I have a 07 chevy duramax and love it. Have had no problems so far. I'm at 32,000 miles. When I had my 24v, it pulled it with no problem. Any hill, it would not shift down, it would never get over 2000 rpm. The allison tranny is awesome, shits 6 gears very smooth. I tow my big 13,000# toy hauler with it. I will never go back to a gas motor in my truck.
