Unfortunately, the 350 diesel only gets about 12 to 15 on the highway

      nope....On highway when my truck was totally stock, I got a consisten 17 mpg. I have a 2002 F350 with the 7.3L and 4:10's

Now with 5" turbo back exhaust, flow through muffler, No cat ( didnt have one from factory), Edge juice with attitude, HPOP cross over, and aFe Stage 2 intake, I can get consistent low 20's (by low 20s i mean 21-maaaaybe 22) and thats being super nice to the pedal on the right.

If i really lay into her, i can throw some fuel tho...

Oh yeah, the 2008 with the 6.4l, with DPF and no tunes gets 12 to 15.
If you pull the DPF and Spartan tune, you can get around 20.

Ford builds a nice truck and so does GM. I have to agree that Dodge is a shipping crate for the cumins. Having worked as a repair tech for Dodge in the past and with what I do now I would not buy a Dodge unless it was so cheap that it was covering the cost of the motor alone.

My friend bought a new 08 GM 2500 with the Duramax and he is getting a consistent 20 MPG. He loves how smooth that truck runs. When it comes time in two years to get a new truck "Corporate Policy". It is probably going to be a GMC with the Duramax or a Ford with the power stroke.

The Chevy's are a good truck, with the Allison transmission. I would probably have to question the 20mpg though, unless he nevers tows a load or drives like my grandmother.

I pull a trailer alot for work. I have 59,000 miles on my 2008, of which about 40,000 has been pulling a trailer. Driving this truck at below 60mph I can get up to 18 unloaded, and about 9 loaded. But I never drive below 60. At 75 it gets 13 and 8.

The Ford with the 6.4 is known to eat fuel, and it does. But it stops in half the time of the Dodge or Chevy, and rides smooth enough to still talk when unloaded.

Perfect truck might be the Cummins engine with the Allison transmission in a Ford body, suspension and brakes.

He is 72 years old. And certainly is in no hurry to get anywhere. He pulls his 5th wheel about twice a year.

X2 I can agree with with the perfect truck theory.

Sounds like my kind of guy... I definitely no longer question his mileage numbers.

I could get 20 mpg (hand calculated) in my 2007.5 crew cab 4x4 duramax at 75 mph every day of the week until I put new tires on it. I put 285's on it at the beginning of Sept and I can't get over 19 mpg to save my life. Last 2 tanks have been 18.2 and 18.5, I think they may have switched to winter diesel here in the Denver area though because I always lose about .5 mpg when they make the switchover. I've driven it at 65 mph on my commute a couple of times (stock tires) and if I wanted to drive 10 under the limit like that all of the time, I could probably have gotten 21 or so but never did a full tank to prove it.

                    Is the 2007.5 pre DPF?

No, it's the new body style with DPF and cat. Based on others' on the diesel place, my truck is normal.

Cool, I bet you love that truck!! I test drove one and didn't like the ride, but the deal breaker for me on it was the brakes (no pun intended).

If you are going to pull alot of big loads (15k+) look into replacing the factory set with an upgraded set, worth every penny!!

I modified my Ford a wee bit and got similar mileage to yours, and about 500hp. But with the current political environment, I thought that it would be prudent to return it to stock for a few years.

Have you had any problems with the DPF clogging?

I love it so far and no problems with the dpf (28k on it). I didn't notice any difference in the ride between it and my buddy's 2008 F250 that I drove for a few legs of our Lake Powell trip last year.

I love this shootout from a few years ago:

Scanned the review, no DPF on the 2007 models, but a DPF on the 2008 Ford. What a performance killer!

I will tell you, I have never raced a quarter mile pulling a load! When they have sports car performance metrics on a tow vehicle, I think that they miss alot of the point.

I have had to stop. Fast. And when you have to stop fast pulling 16,000lbs you pray that it all holds together and the small car that pulled in front of you will not end up like a bug on your windshield!

I like my diesel guzzling F350, it can pull a house (and sometimes does).

By the way, the ride difference is determined by my wife, who looked at me in the Chevy and couldn't actually talk all that well to tell me no way would she ride in it. I thought that the stiff ride would mean a better tow ride and told her so. She won.
