I went to OutletPC.com, and spent $7 (plus some shipping) on an RCA to headphone adapter and 25' headphone extension cable. Now I keep my pod by me, and charge it with a 12V adapter I picked up a while back.

It's possible that with the CMD4, a different interface is required. A couple years ago, Clarion did offer a Marine Cnet interface, as well as the CCA-Ipod, which was geared more toward the automotive line of Clarion head units. Now, they only offer the CCA-Ipod, and may have fazed out the old interface with the introduction of the CMD4A

1st is easiest and cheapest. Off the back of the head-unit, there are a pair of RCA plugs with red wire leads. These are the "AUX In" for such devises as MP3's. All you need is a cable with the 3.5mm headphone plug on one end and left & right male RCA's. Plug it up, select AUX on the head-unit and go.

Now, this requires that the cable be strung out of the storage door to the MP3, so to clean this up, you can get a remote socket that is a female 3.5mm on one end and the 2 male RCA's on the other. This remote socket is a bulk-head type adapter and can be mount through the glove box, or in the helm, with the use of a set of RCA extension cables to reach from the helm to the head-unit. The remote sockets are cheap, and the double-ended 3.5mm cables are cheap.

The last option will give you the best sound quality and also allow for charging of the Ipod (yes, it's Ipod only) while plugged in. Clarion's CCA-Ipod Cnet Ipod interface can be mounted at the driver's helm, but needs and extension cable. It will allow for full control of the Ipods play lists and will give you the best sound quality as it it using the interface plug on the bottom of the Ipod, not the headphone jack. Again, this is using the head-units Cnet interface and mates with only Ipods, and not all models, I dont think. MSRP is $60, but they can be found for less.
If it is a 4th Gen IPOD the CCA Cable won't charge the IPOD bur Crutchfiled sells for $25 an adapter that does the job. The CCA interface is good but to change IPOD repeat, play list and other functions have to be done at the head unit. The remote unit allow you to advance the tunes back and forth but it does not access playlists or Albums. I just set it to play random and I'm happy.

Crutchfield sells the CCA-Ipod cable also. It's gone down in price. It is now $49.95.

            Another Note:

I use the CCA-IPOD cable to hook to the port on my CMD4 and have the SCOSCHE adapter plugged into the NANO Ipod (gen4) and the CCA-IPOD cable end that normally plugs into the IPOD plugged into the SCOSCHE.

If you have a Gen4 IPOD with out the SCOSCHE adapter your ipod will say charging not supported.

With the CCA-IPOD cable plugged into the SCOSCWE and that plugged into the nano the nano will charge.

In my install when the ipod is connected as described you have no control of the ipod screen. You do get limited support using the Head Unit but it is a PITA. I normally set options I want and then plug IPOD to cable.

The Clarion Remotes only seem to allow you to advance to next song (or next random song) and deal with volume but that seems to be it.

It might do more but I don't have the patience and will talk to Crutchfield support again.

I have no clue what the behavior of a Gen5 IPOD and the charging adapter is. I do not know if you need the charging adapter or not. I suspect if you plug into the CCA-IPOD adapter and if charging requires the adapter you probably will see the message charging not supported.

I researched now that the boat is getting ready to be winterized and parked until spring what you can select on the CMD4A head unit connected with the CCA-Ipod cable and .
              SCOSCWE adapter.

Basically it emulates the selections that you would use on your ipod to select P-Lists, Artists, Albums, Songs,Genres, and Composer.

You get the modes by first holding the cat button for a second and release. When you do that it comes up in P-Lists mode.
To select a mode you hit 1-6 to get to mode you want and then press fast forward button to enter a mode.

You then can use the Rotary knob to scroll thru selections within the mode you are in and to select the item you scrolled to you hit the fast forward button to select.

The remotes will display the selection but the only thing the remotes can do is select next track and crank the volume.

You can also use the head unit to select repeat and random modes.

I hope this helps you make a choice to either use aux cable mode or the CCA-Ipod cable and if needed the SCOSCWE adapter.

When deciding where to put my ipod I thought about drilling a hole in my glove box so I could route DIN pug into it and connect to the rest of the CCA-Ipod cable and decided not to. I dressed the Ipod cables o neaten the setup and used Velco to hold it in place on the side of one of my amps so it was out of site.

Since I got confused re: the Clarion CMD5 HU I decided to look at manual.

Page 28 defines the interface to the HU and it appears to be a CNET cable.

Here is the link to the manual. See information on page 28.

                http://www.clarion.com/us/en/MungoBl...6/CMD5_ENG.pdf

Based on what I read in the CMD5 manual, the CMD5 HU in iPod mode works just like I described in an earlier post.
