Anybody on Lake Powell during this storm: Aug 22?

    Glen Canyon News Release

Storm Scuttles Thirteen Boats on Lake Powell

Page, AZ * Thirteen vessels, including a houseboat, were swamped during a brief but intense storm that struck Lake Powell on the afternoon of Saturday, August 22. No injuries were reported.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., National Park Service dispatch at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area broadcast a weather alert over the marine narrow band radio channel advising all vessels on Lake Powell to take cover.

No weather warnings were received by the National Weather Service; however, alert dispatch operators recognized the impending storm from their broadcast location in Page, Arizona, and issued the alert to all boaters.

The storm struck the lower end of Lake Powell, accompanied by winds gusting to 54 mph and waves reaching 6- to 7-feet high in Wahweap and Padre Bays. Three NPS and one Utah State Parks patrol boats responded to distress calls from sixteen separate parties. No injuries were reported.

Very sad day. Sorry to see this. I am sure it is an event those individuals will not forget. Tall said they get some bad storms in August.

A friend of mine was there. He said it was gnarly. He has lived in Page most of his life, and has not seen a storm like that in many years. His little I\O made it through just fine. I suspect his experience was one important determinant of why he did OK.
        Be excellent to one another.

Wow. We were there 2 days previously on the 20th and it was a wonderful day. We live outside of Philadelphia and do our boating on the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay. We have 3 boys ages 11 to 17 and all love to wakeboard and for years we have seen the videos shot at Powell by the pros. We were taking the boys out West for the first time and included a day on Powell which was truly memorable. We rented a boat, a 21 foot Monterey I/O (ok...so not a Tige or even an in-board) which threw a decent wake for the kids. We were up in Warm Creek and then cruised up Navajo Canyon which was amazing (we must have taken 50 + pics in the Canyon alone). During our trip we also went to the Grand Canyon, as well as both Bryce and Zion. The day at Powell was up there with all of these and we want to go back some time and spend several days on Powell in one of the houseboats. It was truly an awesome experience being on Powell and now i feel so lucky we were there on the 20th and not the 22nd.

That was one hell of a storm! Probably the craziest thing I have ever seen at Lake Powell. If you have ever seen the movie The Mummy where the sand storm was charging right at them, that's exactly what it was like. There was someone in our party that had been coming since 1972 and had never seen anything like it. We were at gunsight butte (mile marker 17), that photo of the houseboat was at mile marker 19. Someone from our party with a 26 ft Larson went and helped them out. It was very sad listening to everyone that needed help on channel 16, a lot of people were in trouble. Luckily we had a very experienced crew with 6 anchors for the 75 ft houseboat we were on. We needed every one of those anchors and the engines running to just keep it in place. Luckily my boat was well protected in a cove but it was covered in sand, I mean covered. One of the DCB's was out in it the entire storm, they have a crazy story to tell for sure, but they made it back all in one peice. We were surfing the cove when you could see the wall of sand just devouring the mesas in the background, that's when we decided to get back and batten down all the hatches, we made it back with 5 minutes to anchor all the boats and clear everything off the boats before the sand took over. Other than that storm it was awesome weather and trip. Had a chance to do 127 mph on the water and it was incredible. I will post pics later when I get them downloaded.

              Wow!!!
I have seen some nasty storms down there but nothing like that! We were there just 6 days before. Scattered showers and one windy day but overall pretty decent weather. It's amazing how fast things can change down there.

I've seen some pics of that oncoming wall of sand, pretty amazing. From the accounts that I've heard of that storm, it was a once a decade type event.

Where you at gunsight? Where you at the mouth of the canyon or back in there a ways?

                  Looking forward to your pics.
