    24V steering Cable Update to New One

    All the 24V and 2006 24VE owners. I have now had three inquiry on steering cables for our boats. One of them is my boat. My wife noticed the steering seemed to be getting harder Originalwingnut had his freeze up on him and I can't remember who else inquired about it.

    Here is what I have found out. The factory cable on our boat is a SSC13421 which had some issues and TIGE pushed TELEFLEX to fix those issues and they did with an updated cable SSC15421. TIGE now installs this cables in the 24 foot boats and I am not sure about the 22 they may use it in those also.

    Here is the problem. Getting these cables are very difficult. As myself and OriginalWingNut found out. Mine is on back order until the 21st of August. I can still use it but it just does not turn as easy and that is telling me what is coming.

    So if you think you are getting close to three years of use on your cable and you are noticing that it is getting hard to turn lets get it on back order now. This way you get one before it completely locks up.

    I can get them sent to you for $195.00 that is shipping and everything. They are $175.00 cost + $20.00 shipping and handling fees.

    Here are some links to current pricing on the net. One thing I have notices and OWN can attest to it is the INTERNET sites advertise it but when it comes to ordering they don't have it in stock. He looked all over for one and last minute we had to drop ship it from Teleflex who only had three in there stock. This is why I say get it and have it on hand ready to go or you could loose 4 to 6 weeks of use with your boat.

    Would it come with instructions on how to change it, for those of us a little mechanically challenged?

      I might be interested in one, but just spend $$$ on a new ACME 1235! Might have to wait a month, but mine is in need of replacing as well!

        I had mine replaced at the beginning of this year. I hope I got the newer cable.

            EKS you did the Ballast in your boat. The Cable is notihing compared to that. You can do it no problem. If not I am sure KONA would help you.

              The steering cable really is nothing. I did mine right before memorial and I was expecting at the least an hour! It took around 20-30 mins. I did have some luck on routing mine though, as it slid directly into place on it's own, and that's the toughest part.

              I will say cutting the old cable out w/o a grinder is a BITCH! Bolt cutters just don't work that well, neither does a sawzall.

                Its a day job, and it's not fun. Just did mine. Have a pro do it and save the day for something else.

                      20-30 minutes. There is now way. If your even thinking of doing this on your own pack a lunch its not an easy deal. If you have ballast it makes it even worse. A V-Drive is tough a D-Drive not nearly as bad.

                        By yourself, yes, it's an hour job at least. With two people it's EASY!!!!

                        It seriously took us 25 mins from start to finish... maybe 30 max. Had the floor out in 10 mins w/ one of us working on each side. Routed the cable in less than a minute... really it was about 30 secs (we got really lucky... it just pushed through and hit right the first time). Connected it in less than 5 and put everything back together.

                        Routing the cable is supposedly the hardest part, and mine just popped into place, the first try.

                        If you have access to a impact wrench, we used two battery powered impacts....but a small right angle would be better, it just goes soooo much faster!!!!!!!! Especially down by the tiller arm, which is the part I see being the hardest. To make it go fast we took the electric impact from the starboard side of the motor (had to fish it in from the port side though) to get to the bolt, and held the 1/2 drive on the nut to keep it from turning. Done in 5 secs with that.


                        I think CHP even told me one person could do it in 45 mins when I was inquiring about it... So two working on it and finishing in 25 mins isn't so hard to believe. About 90% of the job you can have one person working on each side.

                        If the dealerships are charging $300 for this, I'll do it for $150. Hell I'd do it for $100.

                            LMAO... no... I don't think that's it. I think I just get motivated to get finished and have a beer so I get to work and don't screw around. Other people ***** foot around when it comes to this stuff. I'll see people working on stuff just stand there staring at a motor or whatever it is their doing, w/ their thumb up their ***. LOL.

                            Plus I study the best plan of attack before I get started. I think that's where most people mess up! They just jump to it, and deal w/ the problems once they get there. I USUALLY know what problems I'm gonna get into before I get to them. When I did mine, I spent 2 or 3 days studying the how to and the pictures.

                              1) you mean you don't add gas to your boat and have it squirt all over the place?

                              2) What is your ideas about powerturning?

                              3) Do you screw up your vinyl so they need replace?

                              4) Do you request Matt to delete your account and then come back to bother TO?

                              5) Blame others that they are profiting from group buys?

                              Okay, I know you answers to the above 5 issues. You are NOT challenged.

                              However, other posters on this thread must drive to work in the "short bus" that have issues with their steering cable install hahahaha
