    Tige Motor Dead!

So about a week or so ago, we are surfing. Had 4 guys, factory ballast (250lb) and one 740lb sack. My buddy is surfing dark side and the motor starts missing about 10 minutes into it. shut it down and it won't start back up. Get towed in. I figure the way it is running, it must be water in the fuel. Drain fuel/water seperator, some water, but not a ton. Put some fuel/water treatment in it and fresh gas. Still ran terrible. So, I took it to the dealer. He just called me and I somehow blew the #7 cylinder! I bought this boat with 8 hours on it in Oct. of 2007. I now have 96 hours on it. Wakeboard, surf, nothing crazy to trash the boat. Now, of course he is going to see if Tige' or Marine Power will offer any warranty. Crazy. He is saying $11,000 to replace the motor! Anyone heard of any motor issues on this year or any other Tige? It has the 5.7 litre 340 HP motor.

Sorry to hear, that sucks! To be honest, these blocks are bullet proof, and are the same blocks that everyone else uses - PCM, Merc, Indmar, Volvo. Have it rebuilt there are very few reasons to have to chunk a total block. Hell, tow it to me and il rebuild it this winter and even put the first 20 hrs of break in on it and have it back to ya in the spring.

Sorry to hear about your boat! Did they say what caused it? What was wrong with #7? Water in it, cracked cylinder, dropped valve? It's a cast iron block like chp was saying, as long as the cylinder is ok you should be good to get a rebuild.

First off, if you purchased the boat new in Oct. of 2007, your under warranty. So forget about the cost. The motor has a 3 year warranty.

In the event that your not...I sent you a PM. Your gonna wanna talk to Lee at marine power. It'll save you about 9K on the motor from what your dealer quoted you!

I think we need a little more info on what is a actually wrong with the motor. Blow head gasket, bent valve, broken piston, cracked block?? What caused the failure.

Friend had a bad spray plate on one of his injectors and it burned a hole through the piston. It was a MP 2006 340.

Was it bought NEW from the dealer in October 2007?

It might get sticky to get this covered under warranty if you bought it used and did not transfer the warranty. Also may depends to some degree on the original date of sale.

If your luck is like mine, then the original date of sale was around August 15, 2006.

My oil pump failed on mine on forth of july 06' 24V. No contamination anywhere to be found to cause the failure. However, although I was out of warranty, Marine Power still took care of me w/ a solution that saved me a heck of alot of money of getting everything machined.

Was the dipstick ever checked? There was recall on some of the 2006/2007 dipsticks.

If this was any cause for damage, it could be covered under the warranty IMO.

Was that to me DaBell? If so, yes. A few years ago, and it was right. While the oil pump failed, it was not due to lack of oil.

I would never sabotage a fellow dealer but I think there may have been an error in the estimate. Retail on that motor is $5000.00 and it can be done with no problems in 20 hrs @ ??? shop rate. Do the math. We have done 2 in the last 60 days. My .02

You say Retail? I guess Tige must have been getting a smoking deal, b/c Marine Power quoted me ~$8K for a brand new motor. Which I don't doubt that one bit.

Buts lets say they quoted his dealer $8K too....Then consider that everyone around here has upped their shop rates to $100/hour. At your quote of 20 hours that's $2K. So $10K... about $1K difference. Not to far off.

The 20 hours for a motor swap though... that's kind of high. We pulled my motor in 1.5 hours. We then stripped my motor down to the long block and swapped all the bolt on's over to the new motor in 3 hours, w/ lots of breaks for a beer or two. I'm dropping it in this week. So I'll let you know how long that takes. Consider on a new motor there should be no swapping of bolt on's... IDK how your hitting 20. Even on the new F250's which requires you to pull the cab, Ford only pays 12 hours. Boats are a bit quicker to pull the motor on if you ask me. But I guess different mechs work at different paces. If it takes your mech a true 20 hours to swap a motor, I'd be looking for a new one... and have the police investigate embezzlement!!!...lol

The sad part is, I was able to pull my boat motor faster than I was able to replace my X's A/C compressor, due to location...lol.
