x2 on that, I also would like to know what kind of boat it was,(year) how long was she sitting on it, and why was she sitting on the platform with the boat running.

I think the parents should be thrown in jail. Might be accidental but the parents knew better IMO. I don't let my kid on the swim platform when the boat is running nor do they not wear a life jacket when they are legally required to do so.

Sorry, rant over. It's a shame that this little girl had to die to prove that CO kills.

Thanks for the reminder Kito. I still don't understand some of the people who insist on leaving the boat running when swapping wakeboarders. They need to see this. It does not take very long for carbon monoxide to put you to sleep.

I did not see where it said she had no PFD...details are a little sparse. Regardless, people are much easier to resuscitate when they have not been on the bottom of the lake. With enough CO, nothing helps.

I think that the only thing we can tell from this article is that they didn't turn off the motor, which we all agree should not happen. We should always turn it off whenever anyone is on the back. She may have had a PFD (or not), maybe that is why they were able to get her out and get her to a hospital. Without a PFD she may have ended up on the bottom of the lake.

Nevertheless, very sad. Lesson reemphasized. Cut the motor.

I have been working taking CO measurements, and doing a safety video on CO. So this is close to home. The one thing that comes to mind, is the FAE works GREAT, it is amazing. However, it doesn't help at idle. If the boat isn't moving, the exhaust can't get pushed back in the prop wash. This is no fault to the FAE, it is still fantastic. But we need to turn our motors OFF when not moving. And kids need to be wearing life jackets at all times on a boat when under 12. My kids are fishes, but it is a NON negotiable thing in our family.

We don't leave our youngests PFDs on our boat. They are in the truck. When we go to the ramp, and get out of car to head onto dock to the slip for the boat, the 3 young ones 11 on down, put on their PFDs at the truck. I don't even let them walk on the dock without their PFDs.

One last thing. I put the CO meter right at the tailpipe of my yukon xl 2500 with 8.1 liter motor. This is a modern catalytic converter motor, and with the meter AT the hole of the tailpipe, I got readings of about 700 -800 parts per million of CO. This can take you down in minutes.

For my video, I put on a lifejacket myself, and demonstrated what teak surfing is, for the record. I had the meter near my face. I went about 5mph. The meter PEGGED at 1000ppm within 2-3 seconds and stayed there. I did it for 20 seconds and cut the motor.

Basically, being on the swim deck, or teak surfing, is like putting your mouth on a tail pipe. Most boats, like mine do not have catalytic converters and put out more CO than a late model car. It all comes out at the swim deck. Extremely dangerous. So next time you have a kid on the deck with the motor running, think if you would strap a tail pipe to their mouth and turn on the car.

FWIW, I didn't read the article. Don't really need to nor do I want to. It's extremely sad that a parent would allow this to happen. Those that choose not to educate themselves need to go away. I still feel EVERYONE should have a license to operate a boat. If you don't tell people what they need to know, they will continue to accidentally kill others. Unacceptable.

The only reason I didn't get the FAE before, was due to my work on the swim deck. Once I knew that was nailed down, I went for it. I love it, its amazing the difference.
