I'm gonna mix stainless and brass...

The Jabsco ballast puppies in my boat are located in a spot that allows about 1-2 inches of clearance above the impeller cover. That creates a lot of difficulty to get the impeller cover off to check their status. The screws that hold the impeller cover on are flat blade screws. I have a short screwdriver, but it is still difficult to get the one furthest to the transom off. That means that I am not going to be able to get it very tight either.

I am going to swap them out for stainless bolts. Then I can get a wrench on them pretty easily. I know they will be snug and I don't have to worry about how I am going to get at them.

I can't find any brass bolts, but I have arrived at the conclusion it really doesn't matter. I have stainless screws on the bottom of my boat holding my brass through hulls in place. Does not seem to create a problem unless the stainless is poor quality and starts to rust. I'll let you know in a year or so next time I burn up an impeller if I get things stuck on there so tight I can't get it undone.

    Any thoughts?

In theory, you will have corrosion between 2 dissimilar metals. Coat the bolts liberally with Anti-seize, should be ok.

As CHP says. Coat them with Anti-Seize dissimilar metals. Should be OK.

Brass and anything else is fine. Especially stainless. No corrosion problems. You can put Never-seize if you want but not necessary.

You should probably use Anti-seize with stainless bolts so you don't get galling (stainless deforming when over tightened). Corrosion shouldn't really be an issue for stainless and brass cause both are fairly corrosion resistant.

Tall craftsmen makes a tool that you need. It looks like a small ratcheting boxend wrench but it's takes the interchangeable screwdriver bits. It only a few $$ and allows you to get at it from 90 degree angle. I will take a pic of it tonight and post it up.

I've got something like that, but it just has the 1/4 inch drive, and does not ratchet. If there were the right attachement, it would work. Good idea! I will look forward to seeing what your unit looks like.

Er, uh, I mean what the tool you are talking about looks like.
