Mussels - latest request by our local lakes

Took the boat out the other night to the local lake and went through the usual mussel inspection. I went and got it re-inspected after taking it out so I can avoid the line next time I go in. The lady handed me a sheet of paper (I will scan it in/post it up tomorrow) for boats with ballast systems and told me that I needed to go have my ballast system "sanitized". I looked at her puzzled as I had all of the bags that I used on the swim platform for her to inspect and they were all empty.

On the sheet of paper, they are requesting that people take their boats to various shops in the area to have a hot water rinse run through the ballast system after every time out on the lake citing that the system needs to be gone through with 140+ degree water in order to make sure that the mussels aren't in there. This lake does not have mussels (that they know of) and I showed them that the bags were empty but she still insisted that I needed to go to one of the local shops. I started to argue and decided to just let it be.

Question - how hot of water can the fly high sacs take? Just wondering if I should plumb my ballast install into the hot water like my heater is and that would guarantee that those little buggers are dead. Just a thought...

Why not use bleach? Seems safer than super-heating your ballast system

Someone on WW posted up that the rangers at their lake made them do a bleach rinse right there in the parking lot before they could launch. Luckily he had some and used a cooler for the water/bleach mix and a tsunami pump to pump the flush into the ballast intake. They were not satisfied till the tanks filled and began to overflow.

That would kill the fish too, wouldn't it?

I went to John Martin over the holiday and stayed in the lower camp ground.I took the boat in and out 3 times.I have an older boat 97 pre2200wt so no ballast.I did the initial inspection on day one and from then on they sighned my paper so I could breeze thru the next 2 times.
I told them I was going to Powell on the 10 and the last time out they gave me a new inspection form saying I was clean and put a seal on my bow hook. They said I should not have to go thru any inspections in Powell as long as the seal was intacked.
I would not run hot water into the sacks. It can not be good for them.I am sure the manufacturers of them are not paying for hi temp material to fab them. They have no reason to incure such a cost.

And if you do not go anywhere else but your local lake? Will you have to do it again when you have never gone anywhere else?

And if you let your boat sit in 100 degree heat for 5 days without using it?

                  Where is the common sense?

For my local "mussel free" lake, we have to take our boat, get it sanitized with their special chemical spray (they even run it through the engine), they tag the boat with the date they sanitized it, and then the boat has to sit dry for 11 days MINIMUM. After this, you are allowed to take the boat on the lake. Immediately after you take the boat off the lake, they tag it with one of their special tags.

If you have a good tag, you can put the boat right on the water, but if you take the boat to another lake (even a mussel-free lake) and brake their tag, you have to go through the entire process again.

The sanitizing of the boat seems ok, but the 11 day wating period seems a little excessive.

See, I think we should have a good ole fashioned clam bake and be done with it! Turn it into a business opportunity and watch what happens.

We have fresh water oysters on our lake...so there's guys who harvest them and sell them to the guys that make faux pearls. Perfect check & balance.

What's to keep birds or animals from potentially transferring them from lake to lake? Don't they have small larvae?
