    Throttle issue and trailer question

    Hi everyone. I'm a newbie on the forum and ran into a problem with my 2007 24ve over the weekend. Whenever I turn around to retrieve a skier or put the boat in neutral the boat will not go any faster than idle when I try to re-accelerate. This occurs in forward or reverse. It's as if the cruise control is set to 1 mph after I put the boat in neutral despite the fact that the cruise control is off. Any help would be appreciated.

    Also what is the ideal hitch height on an extreme trailer as I'm blowing tires left and right?

    Does the throttle thing happen only when the speed control is set or all the time?

    As for the trailer..it depends. I have had three extreme trailers and all have been different because of the tire sizes. All of them were between 18 and 22 inches. Use a level or eyeball it to make sure the main frame of the trailer is level.

    Are you sure your tires have adequate air pressure?

      The throttle thing happens all the time. Really makes it a pain to dock or trailer the boat as you can not go any faster than idle in fwd or reverse.

      I'll check my pressure should it be at maximum?

        No...I think maximum on mine are 65 psi, and I keep them around 35 or 40 (depending on the load I'm carrying). If you've got them at max pressure when they are cold, and then start driving, the heat of the sun and the hubs will increase the pressure above the maximum. That could explain why you're blowing tires.

        As far as the throttle...I have an old boat without any fancy equipment, so I really have no clue where to lead you there. To me, it sounds like its got something to do with the engine computer or your prefect pass. See if you can disconnect the perfect pass (there should be a fuse somewhere to pull) and see if that helps. Did this just start happening this past trip, or has it been going on for a while?

          the throttle started cutting out trip before last and I took the boat in to have it looked at. the perfect pass board was replaced and works fine when you turn it on when you are at the desired speed. However after the boat is put in neutral idle is as fast as you are able to go until you turn off the ignition and restart.

            My Extreme trailer says 50 PSI cold.

              What engine and do you have the EIDB dual battery option?

              Is it the same tire(s)? Check tires COLD!!! Should be close to the tire's max pressure as that is a heavy boat. Most tire failure are due to low pressure.

                My understanding from Extreme is to go 5 psi below maximum.

                  look on the tire sidewall, there should be a max pressure that correlates with the max load capacity of the tire. The tire should be at that pressure when cold, in order to hold the rated capacity of the tire. A few years ago, I had a different boat with a single axle trailer. The boat and trailer were pushing the max capacity of the tires and I did not have the tires inflated to the max cold pressure, ended up blowing out both tires within 5 miles of each other, luckily had 2 spares. Now I will only go with a tandem axle trailer on any boat.

                    I remember hearing somewhere that trailer manufacturers design trailers to accomidate a ball that is 13" off of the ground. Obviously that is a guideline. You want the trailer to sit level while hooked up.

                    Also look at at your tires, do you have radials or bias ply. You can have either bias or radial, but not both; something about the way the tire tracks on the road, I'm told. Air pressure is mighty important too. I run 3-5 PSI under the max pressure stated on the tire.

                    Are you always blowing the same tire on the trailer? Maybe you have a axle that's toed in or out, or the two axles are not paralell.

                      I have dual batteries with the 5.7 340hp engine.

                      My tires are brand new greenball towmaster st205/75d-14/c1 they are rated at 1750lbs each and are running at 45lbs maximum says 50lbs. Maybe my tow angle is off? I had enough of the carlisles as there was no certain tire that kept blowing.

                        Check the charge on both batteries, if one is low, the ECM (engine computer) will go into "Limp Mode" and prevent the engine from throttling up.

                          I would start with the batteries. Make sure you get them tested with the correct testing unit. And if you charge them make sure it is the correct type charger for charging. Todays batteries can't be charged with older battery chargers.

                            From my calculations, your boat weighs 4320 empty, full tank of gas weighs 304, trailer weighs 1200, total weight without stuff is 5820. You can carry 7000 lb. From the link below, you can see that for every 5 psi below cold max psi you lose 500lb weight capacity between 4 tires. If you hit a bump or go over a small bridge and unweight and then compress the tires on the down hill side of the bridge, you can temporarily overload the tire capacity if you are not at max cold psi of 50lbs. Been there done that. Always check your tire pressure.

                              great information I can't thank all of you enough. I intend on bringing my level with me and checking my tire pressure. I will then tow the Tige to the shop and have them change out the batteries and have them look into this abnoxious throttle issue.
