    Matt,

I have a closed tube trailer frame so when installing them we had to drill a hole and then tap it to thread the hole. Another choice would be to drill a hole for a pem stud that the ratchet bolt would fit. Is a lot easier for do it yourself project. Although mine failed for some reason, I think they are worth ever penny.

Overtons sells what appears to be the same buckle for $30.00 less online at.

I had both of mine crap out this week end and I will be pulling one off to see if I can fix.

Here is a pair of retractable tie downs for a lot less than others on market.

        Here is a link.

I broke one this weekend so I am looking for replacements. Although I only need one buying the pair allows me to fix with matching tie downs

        Hope it helps you Matt

My trailer also came with them. They're great, you'll never loose your tiedowns, and they are always ready when you are.

wingnut - I would move those in a little, so you can hook them to the transom lifting rings. Or route the straps around the platform. It may not be as pretty, but "in case of emergency" I would think it would work better.

I may just install them anyway.
No you're not the only one, I had to drill my holes. I never thought about the rust as it's not an issue typically out here. I just drilled the holes and installed the buckles. That's not too say that I wont regret this in a few years!!!! There are rust inhibitor products if you are concerned about that. I have a DHM trailer....don't know anything about boxed or tube trailer designs though!

My wife and I have been going around and around about this. She connects the buckles to the platform brackets like you, but I run them all the way up to the lift bolts.......is that overkill?

Did you use the hardware that it came with or did you have to buy longer bolts?

One good thing about my lifting rings is that they are below the swim platform on my RZ2.

I would go to the lifting rings. But I also try to carry a spare of everything with me too. I'm kinda anal that way.

This has been a topic many times. I feel that the anchors for the swim deck are by far stronger than the webbing that the boat buckles are made of. I think that the main purpose of boat buckles is to stop the boat from bouncing seperate from the trailer. I hope I never have to find out if they will keep the boat and trailer attached in a bad accident.

DHM did the same thing when they were in business.

I have had two DHM trailers, one with and one without. The one without the buckeles I put on. If I remember right I had to pull out the tail light to put the nut on the backside of the bolt for mounting.
I'm on a boat man. I got my flippy floppies....

But you aren't attaching them to the boat, you are attaching them to the platform that is attached to the boat via 2 pins.

I have seen pictures where the boat ends up in the back of the toe vehicle. I would think the platform would be pulled off the boat, with that kind of force.

Yeah, I have seen pictures. The pins are not supporting the platform they are just locking it into the brackets. The way the brackets for the platform are notched and anchored, in an accident the platform would have to be moved out and up away from the boat to shear the pins (The straps will prevent that from happening). I then go back to my previous comment I think the shear strength of the pins is probably higher than the strength of the webbing of the boat buckle. I may have some that think I am doing it all wrong, but when I got my boat the local dealer was telling everyone that a 24V was heavy enough that you didn't need transom straps. I put on the boat buckles and have pulled them up to the lifting rings a few times and don't like the way they bind against the platform and also mar the gator grip. Maybe this will end up being one of those "Stupid Hurts" lesson, but for now I am sticking with it the way it is.

I'm with you OWN, I attach mine to the platform brackets, mainly because when I attached them to the lift rings, the straps were rubbing against the platform brackets and starting to get worn through at that point.
