Fixing muffler hole - mighty putty (sorta)

So I got around to finally messing w/ my hole in the muffler this evening. I ran to wally world to pick up some fiberglass mat, as I already had the resin. Was gonna try and yank the muffler to make a real repair. Well while I was trying to decide between fiberglass matt and cloth, I saw the Permatex® PermaPoxy™ epoxy stick for fiberglass / underwater repairs. I remembered sometime ago that Lee said something about using epoxy to repair muffler holes. I said to myself... I've read the reviews of that mighty putty crap being good for one thing only and that was stopping leaks. Figured this was about the same as that Billy Mays crap! I read the back, says it's good to 3K psi and 400 degrees, so it meets the criteria. I figured, what the heck... $4 lets give it a shot. If it works, it saves me from pulling the muffler as I could work this between the transom and the muffler. If not, then I'm out 5 mins and $4.

Basically this is just a two part mixture that you knead together in your hand. It activates, starts getting hot and u put it in and over your hole.

I open up the package, and sure enough... it looks EXACTLY like mighty putty. I said to myself GREATTTTTT this crap isn't gonna work. Well I started off w/ a little ball that I stuffed in the 1/4 hole as a plug after I sanded the muffler lightly to scuff it. Then took a bigger ball and worked it around that plug to seal it off. I could feel it instantly start bonding with the fiberglass muffler. After I was satisfied that I had sufficiently covered the hole, I began to mess w/ my bilge that had a stuck float. Bout 5 mins go by (this stuff sets in 5 mins) and I reach back there to try and find it. It's gone. I'm like... what the heck, it fell off. Then I feel my finger bumps that I had made while pressing it on and the little bit of warmth coming off of it. It had got hard already and felt just like the muffler. It had totally bonded. I was kind of shocked.... it just might work. Tomorrow it'll be fully cured and I'm gonna sand it smooth. Then I'll water test it this weekend. The leak doesn't show up with a fake a lake for some reason. So I'll know how it works when I get on the lake. I really can't believe I'm saying this, but I think it might actually have worked. Mighty Putty might have saved the day...haha. Def. gonna keep some on the boat if this works, just in case!

Let us know but again, I hope you aren't referring to keeping it onboard just in case the hull has damage to it?? I don't think any amount of Mighty Putty would help that.
