Went to the lake Friday night to check things out, notice that my tire was messed up. Last year I blew a tire on the interstate and now the other side tire looks like the belts shifted. (Carlisle brand - less than 2yrs old). So I change tires and found my spare was to wide. I had to knock the wood protector out to get home. So today I changed both wood/carpet sides, and I carpeted the entire wooden piece. The side that was closes to the tire was not carpeted before.

Is this a bad idea having carpet on both sides? Just thought about it and if the tire rubs the carpet could that start a fire? What do you guys think. If not I really don't want to mess w/ it, but wasn't sure.

Did you coat the board w/ fiberglass resin before applying carpet? If not, I would wonder if the carpet would hold moisture and cause the wood to rot quicker.

As for starting a fire, I doubt it, maybe just some extra smoke.

No but I thought about it, just didn't do it. My old boards were not fiberglassed so I figured these didn't need to be but I just got treated plywood and not marine grade if there is a difference.

Do you think it would rot quicker? I can take it off easy enough.

Think that if it was to get hot enough to start a fire you would see the smoke first. The treated ply wood will not last s long as the marine, but the marine plywood is more expence and no as easy to come by.

I would only have the side facing the boat carpeted. The carpet will seal in moisture and contribute to faster rotting.

What type of carpet are you using? Hopefully it's marine grade carpet and not your normal house carpet.

No, marine carpet. outdoor stuff. It isn't as nice as what was on it. I guess I could order some from overton's. The carpet that was on it is the same carpet I used for the bunks.

I think I may cover another piece over this winter and then just carpet one side. It should hurt just for a summer or two. right?

I can cut the back side off just like the original was very easily, so I think I will do that also.
