Wakeboard and Surf Board Advice

We will get our new 09 RZ2 later this week. I need advice on a beginner surf board the whole family can use and wakeboard advice. I assume the same surf board can be used by the whole family (my kids are 8, 9 and 12 (all boys). I know I need a youth board and a board for me...I also assume I need one for my wife? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated...as well as if there are preferred online vendors you guys have used. By the way, since these will be beginner boards, I'll want the adjustable bindings, so the boards can be used for friends and family that boat with us. I'll upgrade once I start progressing.

The Hyperlite Broadcast is a great surfboard for learning.
Look at boardersbestbuy.com. They have really good deals on last years models.

Wakeworld.com actually has a pretty decent site to get info and some reviews on equipment. i would start there and get an idea what you're looking for. Do the "request a deal" feature at boardersbestbuy.com and they'll blow your mind with the price.
I got last years LF Thruster for $300, local dealer wanted $450.
Surfboards are SUPER fragile so it may not be a terrible idea for you to start with some used boards until your kids get better, it would save ya some money.

The CWB Ride is also a great beginner board for surfing. As for wakeboards, check out Wakeworld like Jason said or even check out your local Craigslist postings to see if anyone has some used ones that you can pick up cheap.

new wake surf board purchased

I just bought Hyperlite Landlock Wakesurfer 2008 model thats 5' 11" for $220 from evogear.com. Is a big board but I'm a big guy at 240 so we r giving a whirl. Will post result after we try it out. jb

I think the CWB Ride is better than the Landlock for a beginner board. The landlock rides a lot like a wake board which isn't what you want for a surfer.

Second on the landlock thumbs down. It's certainly rideable, but it's much touchier than some of the other models mentioned.

Third on the landlock thumbs down. I would go with the 4'8" Broadcast with all 3 fins to start. Then remove the center as you progress. The bigger broadcast is too big for people under 150 lbs.

Wakeboards, I would go with a Motive.

Re wakeboards ...

For adjustable bindings, I love CWB with the hinges (e.g., Torq or Faction). The hinge makes it 100x easier to get in and out.

For boards, check out the boards with the thinner toeside rail and more agressive toeside fins (e.g., Ronix Vault). They really make holding your toeside edge easier, which is tough when learning.

These boards are specific to left foot forward or right foot forward riders, so it wouldn't make a good community board.

The asymetry is limited to toe/heel. Tip/tail are symetrical. There is the downside that a goofy (like me) has to ride "backwards", the only result of which is looking at the tail graphics while riding. I admit that I set the bindings at duck 15/15 but a beginner might as well start like that.
