    2000 22i Fuel Pump?

We went out last week and were on the water pulling my 5 year old daughter in a tube for about 20 minutes. When she got done I jumped in to wakeboard. I wakeboarded for about 10 minutes and the boat bogged down and died. I jumped in the boat and tried to start it. It evidently started and we were idling back to the dock and tried to accelerate and it bogged down and died. I tried to start it again, finally got it started and it did the same thing. After the second time it would crank, but not start. I got a tow back to the dock. Since then I have changed out the fuel and fuel filter but all it does is crank. Could this be the fuel pump or something else?

How warm of a day was it? Might help if there might be a vapor lock issue. Not common but can happen.

When you turn the key on, do you hear the fuel pump engage? Don't crank it, just flip it to what would be accessory setting on a car. You should hear the fuel pump cycle on.

Yes I hear that. It sounds like a dying cat! What else could be the problem Distributor cap?

What motor and what year model boat?

If it's a Mercruiser, then distributor cap could definitely be an issue...you need to change it out every year or two. Older Mercs could also need fuel pressure regulators, but normally there's an alarm that goes off.

Finally, it could be your anti-siphon valve is stuck in the gas tank. You'd need to get to your fuel tank to check that.

1st thing I would do is check all you connections. I had the same thing this wkend and my ECS sensor sires was not connected. I am going out this wkend to see how mine will run.

                Check out this thread
                http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9836

When you go to this thread look at the link that Dogbert put out there, that will show where all your stuff on the engine is. Find the 2 things that Chptril mentions and check then, he was right on for me. I was just to dumb to know.

I still need help. I changed the distributor cap and rotor this weekend and it still cranks but will not start. I talk to a local boat mechanic and he suggested that ii sounded like a fuel pressure problem. How can I check this and does the boat have to be running to get an accurate reading?

I would check all you sensors, make sure all you wires are connected an it isn't something like that.

Then you can use a laptop to run a scan on it, it may or may not tell you something but is worth a try before taking it to someone. Others on here can explain how to use a laptop for the scan, this is what one of the local dealers told me they do. You may be able pay then to run a scan for you. Good luck.

I forgot to mention my stupidity too.....after I intalled the new distributor and rotor and it did not work I start wiggling wires and broke an injector on the fuel rail! 120.00 bucks!!!

I'm pretty sure the Mercruiser scan tool is proprietary. I don't think Autozone will be able to help.

Here are a few sites with scan tool info.

If you can find out what the fuel pressure is when you turn the ignition to ON it could eliminate a lot of things.
Our Merc Mag MPI shows around 22-23 psi with the ignition ON/engine OFF.
It will hum a few seconds and stop when the pressure builds up.
Harbor Freight sells a tester: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92699
It hooks to a valve on the end of a fuel rail similar to a bicycle air pressure gauge.
