How to Wakesurf - Get the Kiddies Surfing

Something we will be doing frequently at wake9.com, is how to videos for wakesurfing. We did the first one yesterday afternoon. I do wish we had a better spokesmodel, but I guess I will do in a PINCH! I am prepared for all of the ballast-boy jokes, etc. So bring em on.

    http://wake9.com/blogs/how-to-wakesurf-101/

It may take an hour for the video to show up, youtube is processing. Seriously, tell me what you think. And you must click the link above, and then click the "Catch the Wave!" link. Tell me what you think. Feel free to embed the video in this thread, when it is done processing.

Nice job ragboy! I just had my daughter (9) watch the video with me so she could see that other kids are doing it. She's still afraid to try it but we don't have any other kids that are doing it.

that was awesome Rag - great job!

          Question:

We fall into the camp of a single board that everyone rides. It's a Landlock 5'11" I believe...Would the things you cover in that video apply not only to kids but to everyone that is starting out? Some people seem to have a really tough time picking it up and I haven't been able to figure out what the difference is for people that can't get up on it.

Also - the Landlock board was cool for last year - but its sort of getting boring b/c it's so big and we cant turn it very well. Do you have a suggestion for a new board for us? (most people can get up on the LL - but we can't turn it very well). Would a different board give us some more manuveratibilty back there?

First, the landlock is one of my favorite boards for getting people started, it is EXCELLENT for this purpose. If someone is having trouble, if the issue is not being able to flip the board, in other words you start and the board just slides forward, and they cannot get up, these same techniques apply. Also, the issue of PLACEMENT apply. Stay to the back of the board at least to get up. Sometimes when adults get up, you will find they just can't lean forward enough to get the wake to push them. They just can't get slack in the rope. This is either they are too big, need a bigger board, but most likely, it is just they need to move their feet forward on the board, about 3-6 inches. It is weird, but I will teach 10 adults, all with feet on back of board, like we display with thomas, and they all get up, and they all are able to slack the rope. But there is always that 1 guy out of 10 that can't slack it, and usually moving them forward some solves it.

The thing that makes the landlock great, is that it floats most people, and it is stable. But correct, it does not turn very well. If you are looking for a board that can turn and be fast, after the landlock, I would have 2 suggestions. A larger size walker composite or bullet, or a Inland Surfer blue lake. I would not get the smaller sizes that you see RJ and James walker riding. Those are if you weight 150lbs and are very athletic. You want a faster board, that is fun to ride.

Here is a video, of Dennis Horton, who is a rep for Walker Project. He is riding a Bullet that is longer than normal, I think it is 5'6" or around there. Dennis is 6'2" ish and about 250 I would guess.

Now here is a video of my daughter Ashley on the blue lake, She doesn't do much on it, but this board is pretty fast, and fun to turn. People think, if they are going to get an IS board, get the Loogey, since it is the "performance" board. The loogey is great, but too small for many people. The Lake is larger to float more people, but is still a fun board, and it is still quick. It is not a good learning board, people get up, and it is too squirly and fast to learn on.

              Have Fun!

Great Video! My kids never wanted to try wakesurfing, but after watching your instructional video they are willing to try.

                Thank!

OK, I don't think I am going to post this on wake9, you will understand when you watch it. But today, we were working on 2 new how to videos, quicker ones. We were having lots of fun. But it started to get windy, and rough. Anyway, I think you should just watch this, I guarantee its worth 3 minutes of your time. You will learn a new wake9 term, the "No No Zone".

Make you watch in HQ or HD, so you can see the subtitles for parts you may not be able to hear.

Pretty funny. That ought to be classified as how to "have fun at the lake"
