Typically, the impeller type pumps do not need a check-valve or shutoff between the pump and sac, but a couple of guys that have used them in recent installs have notices a little draining while under way.

If you want to prevent/stop unwanted draining, a check-valve, after the pump, is the way to go for a truly automated ballast system. If you want piece of mind safety, then you need a brass shut-off valve between the thru-hull and pump to close the system off in the event of a leak.

I do not have any check valves for my impeller pumps and I do not have back bleeding. These pumps work very nicely and you can run hoses directly from the manifold to the pumps.

I have a second pump, the tsunami, as an empty pump. I did this with the Jabsco pumps I had because they always gave me problems when reversing to empty. IN addition, I like being able to see the water empty out the side of the boat.

Each sac has three fill points; one for the fill pump, one for the empty pump and I used one for an overflow line.

I can take pictures this weekend if anyone is interested.

I really like dogbert's install, I want to something like that if I get a new boat. I guess I could always put the brass valves in like he did and if I don't need them.....Great. If I do, they are there to use.

I have shut-off valves, but they are more there for the time my hoses start leaking. The ballast puppies don't leak all that much. Maybe a little, but really not all that much. I just turn them on whenever I pick up a rider just to make sure they are full...it's really not a big deal.

is it ok to mix brass and bronze?

the thru hulls and the 90 degrees will be bronze and the ball valves are brass.

I dont see it being a problem for a ballast system on a trailer boat.

It hasn't been an issue for me. Check out my thread on my ballast install for my 21v.
